(Season 5 spoilers) Boardwalk Empire: Farewell Daddy Blues

Richard won't die this season, I have no idea why you people think he will.

Maitland's definitley a goner, if she hasn't just run off forever. Knox will die. 50/50 on Narcisse and Chalky. I actually suspect they'll both survive, maybe. I'm more worried for Chalky's family.

Gillian seems screwed. Death or jail for her.

Well I was right about most of it! RIP Richard. That scene was heartbreaking, as was Maybelle's death.

I don't think we'll be seeing Narcisse or especially Maitland next season. Could be wrong of course, it's happened before. Where is Garvey based? I suppose if it's NY or somewhere then yeah, he could well show back up.

ETA: Just read an interview with Terrence Winter and Narcisse is definitely back next season.

Al's building up quite the crew. Was he behind the hit on Torrio? I think they left that ambiguous on purpose.

I was a bit disappointed at the lack of the New York mobsters, I hope they play a bigger role next season.

What a bitter ending for everyone, except Maggie I guess. Upon reflection, I don't see how they could have come up with any better ending for Richard. His story arc was deep. It's a testament to the writers that I have to tell myself "They're all criminals and they've earned the outcomes of their lives" to calm me down.

So do we think Van Alden explained his situation to Capone when he heard who he would be picking up? Or is he counting on being able to convince Eli to keep his secret. O'Banion knew "Mueller" had killed a few people, but Capone is likely to think he's working undercover or something.

Chalk another one up for Nucky's terrible security. Every single one of his men taken by surprise and disarmed,

But on the whole, I really enjoyed this season far more than last season, which was by far my least favorite of the four, although I was a little underwhelmed by the finale.

I am really glad that the writers finally got rid of Richard, and that he was given some breathing room this season to expand as a character completely on his own from the main plot for so long. Although you could see his death coming a mile away, and although some of the techniques they used were fairly cliche (couldn't stop thinking of Russell Crowe walking through the field to get to his wife and child in Gladiator), I found it to be very touching and effective overall.

Nah no way. That's too good a source of tension for the writers to play with next season.

It would have been nice to see Jimmy in Richard's afterlife seeing as the last thing we see of him is a rotten corpse/skeleton.

That was such an interesting way to start the episode by showing the tall grass. I didn't get what was going on until I the reporters all started running out of it.

But they needed to keep the ambiguity up until we saw Richard's whole face.

Only to rip that hope away from us and shoot us in the gut and leave us bleeding under the boardwalk.

Damn it.

I sure am gonna miss Richard, but honestly, I think ending his story this way was great writing. It's still sad, though. He basically let himself die. I mean come on, Torrio survived half a dozen bullets, I'm pretty sure Richard would have survived if he'd gone to to a hospital. But I think he knew he wasn't gonna come out of it alive even before he got to the club, judging by the scene at the train station. He sacrificed himself to save Tommy and his family.

Great episode. Did Richard get shot? I guess he must've, but I missed it. His death was very emotional, even more so than Jimmy's, but I saw it coming quite a bit (with the emotional goodbyes at the train station).

The Knox/Eli fight was the best staged fish fight I've ever seen, I think. God damn. Eli/Van Alden/Capone in Chicago is a match made in heaven, can't wait.

Great scene between Hoover and Narcisse. Having to submit to snitching on his hero for the "white man" must be a fate worse than death for him. Not that he deserves any less.

I haven't been the biggest fan of Buscemi throughout this show, but I gotta hand it to him in this episode. The scene where he almost killed his brother was fucking heartbreaking.

Alright, some thoughts:

Even though Richard's death seems pretty telegraphed in retrospect, I was still taken off-guard by it. As much as it sucks to see the character go, there's really not much left for him in the story. They already blew their wad last season with him going on the killing spree, so nothing can really top that (and it would be too easy for him to basically serve as a "get out of jail free" card for any difficult situation that requires violence, which he basically already was). That meant either killing him, or giving him the happy ending send-off, which doesn't really work for the character. Him dying beneath the boardwalk was a pretty great ending. Also, that whole ending sequence had some major inspiration from An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge -- even similar cinematography.

I was glad that neither Narcisse nor Chalky died. I really didn't want Narcisse to just be another "villain of the season", so I'm glad they avoided that rout, and I'm interested to see where they go with him.

Even though I was literally yelling at my TV during the Eli/Knox fight (I really like Eli), and even though it was very well choreographed and acted, I'm actually beginning to find the super-suspenseful-ultra-brutal-close-quarters-combat thing to be a bit overused at this point. It happens like once every season, and twice this season. But yeah, Eli going to Chicago is awesome. Him, Van Alden, and Capone all in the same storyline is going to be fantastic. I was very glad they didn't kill Eli off, especially with Richard gone, since he's now one of the most compelling characters in the series as far as I'm concerned.

Overall, I'd say this is probably the second best finale after season two. Three and one are about on par with each other, I think, with different strengths and weaknesses.
