Hypothetically, if GRRM hadn't let the fans or anyone know that there would be seven books, just "more books" and that was it - how many books would you think are left in the series, as of the end of book 5?

Just curious. I think I probably would've assumed ten books total, with the end of book 5 being the middlepoint.

I still think it will be despite GRRM's promises

I'd say eight.

If not for the TV show and the potential need to keep ahead, I think it'd be best if Martin wrote eight books. He indicated the last two are going to be huge -- so why not cut them down to a more manageable size?

Eight.  Maybe 9.  Depends on when the Others invade.

I'd say 8.

But I think it's going to be 8 anyway. Don't see GRRM fitting everything into only two more books.

I'll go with 8 too (and I still think it will be).

I agree with the general consensus.
I think there will be eight, it seems like too much to fit into two books and do it justice.

I'm more than happy to be surprised but I'll have to wait and see.

Three to five left to go. Feast and Dance are clearly the middle act in a play of three.

Just to be different, I'll say one. I can actually see it all being resolved in another 1000 pages. After all, if nothing much new is introduced and it's just wrapping up the stories, that ought to be enough. :P

I can see it actually lasting two books if the Others just swoop in and kill everyone in the end while HUMANITY wars and Martin goes the route of showing how AWFUL and VAIN people are.

I could see the series ending with one book, if the series didn't have the beyond the wall plots. But the Others still haven't really done anything, so no way. haha

I'd cry.

I would find that ending supremely disappointing. :(

I would think its a tale that could continue on forever. New characters are constantly being introduced, in theory at least it could go on forever.

Well, more than 7 - I'd guess ADWD was at about half way, so 9 ?

Eight. Considering what's left in the story and for character fulfilment purposes, it makes the most sense to me.

a total of 12 books seems right.   the pacing is in no hurry yet, as if it expects 6 more books to get where it's going.  Combine this with the sense I have that we're still not in the home stretch.   If we are, then I better start scaling back my expectations for all the things I want to see happen.    the dream of us getting a bigtime Other invasion is so not happening; this would take more books on top of the dragon fight targ thing that's going to take all the remaining pages on its own to get its butt in gear.   I wonder if we're going to get lots of 2-for-1 POVs like with the magic candles allowing chats between Sam & Jon or something that cheats around the current system, such as accelerating the flow of time between check-ins with each POV.

Two to four more books, only because ADWD feels like it's a bit beyond the halfway point. Wouldn't be surprised if we do end up with eight.
