It is most certainly a factor mitigating GRRM's writing process, whether it will end up affecting his writing in a negative way or not is a different matter. Okay, I overreacted ;) But the showrunners will not slow down the story to wait for the books. All story decisions should be made with making the story better in mind, not waiting for the book author. Should they however decide to do this, the TV show will suffer. Season 3 was bad enough. Sure it had some of the best moments in the show, but man did the storyline slow down. Too little plot progress. This is an opinion shared by many people I have talked to. And it is something I hope and believe D and D are aware of. EDIT: I also seriousy hope they don't think the quality of the books are an excuse to make Season 5 worse than Season 4.
