So Shia LaBeouf : Plagiarist and A**hat

Shia Labeouf is a living example what happens when multi-million dollar entities aren't kept under wraps by a group of publicists who use the latest market research to craft the most profitable image possible. The fact that he's such a great argument for that sort of thing makes me resent him even more.

Oh Shia, you so CRAZY! http://gawker.com/shia-labeouf-reportedly-dragged-out-of-cabaret-in-handc-1596776452

Broadway World is reporting that Shia LaBeouf was hauled out of a production of Cabaret during intermission by police in handcuffs. He was reportedly "being disruptive" during the first act.

Cast member Danny Burstein apparently posted to his Facebook, "Ladies and gentlemen, this is your places call for Act II. Also, to let you know, Shia LaBeouf has just been escorted from the building in handcuffs."

Wait, there's more!

I read that yesterday, and I've long thought that Labeouf is a very natural actor. I can forget that he's a cunt, and that he was in those Transformers movies, as long as he's putting forth quality performances like in 'Lawless' and 'Disturbia'.

Hell, he was the only thing in the 4th Indiana Jones movie that didn't make me want to put my goddamn eyes out.

Him swinging in the trees was the scene that convinced me to get up and leave the theater. Which i did. I then walked home from lower manhattan cuz my ride didnt want to go.

It's an expert apology that makes him seem far more likable, but I think it's very curious that (1) he's suddenly come over all contrite just before a new movie comes out with him in that till now has had the marketing basically try to pretend he's not in it as much as possible and (2) that the stuff that led to the media flare-up in the first place, ie the shameless plagiarism, is barely mentioned. Because it's very easy to play the sympathy card with 'I'm a young man and I was an idiot but also look how I was brave to put myself out there and hey, I'm funny too!' but if he reminds everyone that it started off because he was stealing things from people much less fortunate than himself than all that sympathy becomes a lot more strained.

In other words, I'm not really buying it. I don't have any particular dislike of him, but I don't really think he's learned anything apart from 'a good PR guy can spin anything'.

Most young people, to varying degrees, go through this kind of period.

Really? I'm not sure that's entirely true.

His outbursts rub people the wrong way, but you know what? Who cares.

I'm betting the people he plagiarized care. This article focuses on his dedication to his art, while barely mentioning that he committed the worst crime one can commit in the art world. His fighting and run-ins with the law are not what turned public opinion against him; in fact it all just adds to the bad boy mystique. What caused public opinion to turn against him was him stealing someone else's creative work and passing it off as his own. The plagiarism only gets two short lines buried deep within the article.

Whew, I blacked that out of my memory... But even still, I don't hold that horrible, horrible, sequence against him. He gets the same immunity that the cast of the Star Wars prequels get. He didn't write the shitty script.
