Do you guys think that this is a reasonable possibility in the future or does the Tolkien movies end with There and Back Again??

If you think they'll do Silmarillion do you think it's financially and technologically viable?

i don't think tolkien estate will allow for further films based on tolkien's work in foreseeable future and i can't say i blame them.

The rights to the Silmarillion haven't been sold yet and given Christopher Tolkien's disdain for the films it's unlikely they will be. I suppose it all depends on how principled Tolkien is and how much money New Line would be will to pay for what is quite a risky venture.

I expect we'll get at least a couple films bridging the gap between the Hobbit and the Lotr though.

CT won't live forever, and when he and those of like mind have moved on, I expect some younger members of the family will be pleased to sell the rightfs.

Shame, that.

I think this would work better as a series when CGI is vastly improved.

So 2020 or so.

No. Too much story to condense well and, if possible, too epic to film without looking silly.

That said I'd love to see Terrance Malick's vision of the Quenta Silmarillion.

Keep PJ away from the Quenta. It demands a level of subtelty he just does not have in him.

They could do individual stories from the Silmarillion, like Legolas & Luthien, or that time Legolas challenged Morgoth in single combat.

I see you are channeling what GRRM said in an interview sometime ago. That might happen I guess.
I'm actually hoping they might manage to but Children of Hurin,Because it seems quite doable in terms of length.

(This assumes PJ gets his grubby hands on the Quenta:)

Or the time Legolas sailed to Valinor to rouse the Valar against Morgoth then realised he didn't need them and went and took Angbad singlehandedly.

Does the studio have the right to do a LOTR based fanfic film?

More seriously they have the right to the Hobbit, Lotr, the appendixes and anything they choose to make up. Afterall, the Tolkien Estate can't have the rights to stuff Tolkien didn't write. So theoretically we could well have the Adventures of Legolas.

That's great news. But I was thinking more of doing some sort of crossover, maybe bring in Cthulhu from HPL and have Legolas organize a new party to find the R'yleh and defeat him. I'm sure RS Bakker wouldn't mind if Kellhus joined the team, I mean that guy is desperate for some money.

Nothing defeats Cthulhu, not Legolas, not Gandalf not even Manwe. There's a deep being in LOTR too if you remember,no one defeats him do they.

When you put it that way it sounds like complete fanfic :P. (For those who don't know that actually happens).

They could well do Legolas and Gimli's tour of middle earth though if they wanted.

Well, they don't have to really destroy him just bury him with his island underwater. But who's the being in LOTR? I have an idea but just to make sure.

We never get a name actually,Gandalf just calls them Deep Ones, the ones who were there before the Elves and stuff like that.
Ungoliant is one of them,So is the Tentacally creature outside Moria(The Watcher) and maybe Tom.
