Opinion On Theon Greyjoy

Not really. I don't find him likeable. But, I can understand why he is that way and that adds context to his behaviour. I mean, he's hostage to the Starks and his future survival depends exclusively on his father's towing the Baratheon line. He may not have been overtly mistreated by the Starks, but at the same time, he must always have been aware that should the Ironborn rebel again, Ned Stark would be duty bound to execute him. For ten years he's had that Damocles Sword hanging over his head and, in the meanwhile, he's become completely alienated from his family and the people he spent the first ten years of his life around. I am only speaking of Theon in book one, though.

You have to keep in mind the HBO TV show does not always faithfully represent the characters in the books, the show is helpful to give our imagination the face to go with the description of the character & the actor Alfie who plays Theon does an awesome job especially as the show progresses. There is a key scene in the show that does not happen in the books & as you continue reading this does tend to colour your feelings for his character.

I hated Theon for everything, A LOT. I found out that actor Alfie is brother of a lovely singer Lily Allen!! So I kind of will imagine him in books differently now with less hate :) And I agree that Alfie does a wonderful job!

Anyway, I did not like Theon from the first moments. Do not now why, looks like gut feeling after all.

I've almost finished ADWD (don't worry this post won't contain spoilers) and seeing theons journey throughout most of the series has made me realise I pity him more than I ever disliked him. In the first book I remember thinking the chapters he was in just made him sound too cocky and vain (because he was). But I believe by the end because of some of the events that took place GRMM wanted us to at least empathise with Theon in some of those situations. But yeah I have never been too keen on Theon and I didn't think he was a likeable and witty arsehole like Tyrion is. That sort or cockiness I find acceptable in a character, but the way Theon acted and most of his persona just added to the fact that he was basically a bit of a twat. But yeah I agree I can see why his insecurities made him act the way he acts with people. I just never liked him much from the start but I have pitied him sometimes definitely.

My opinion? Well i stated many times before that he was at some point maybe my favorite character and that was solely based on books , i never found him a bad guy , he is not a bad guy , he is not a twat , he was a lost boy , since we're talking about book 1 , i didnt pay much attention to him , he was a minor character , but i found him cocky and arrogant and since he hadnt done any bad actions i was positive about him.

I feel a lot of sympathy for Theon. He's a victim of a terrible system. He's honour-bound to his family, yet has a deep friendship with Robb. He has a father who doesn't care much for him, whereas the man holding him hostage has had a bigger role in raising him. He's neither a Stark, nor a "real" Greyjoy. He's a traitor to Robb if he follows his father, and a traitor to his family if he follows Robb. He's a weakling if he shows compassion (people were never going to respect him because of familiarity), and he's a callous tyrant if he asserts himself. He can never win, no matter what he does.

He's a poor sod who's fallen through the cracks in the system.

The PoV characters observing and describing him, don't like him for starters. Seems like no one likes him, but Robb. I don't know if Ned says anything against him, but the rest of the family pretty much point out that they think he is a cocky twat. And in all fairness to them, he IS.

I always feel sorry for him, even while he being a twat. He truly got one of the worst deals in the story and I'm aching to see him triumph in some way at some point and maybe become a good person in the process.

I think the way he is portrayed on the show, acting and writing, is very faithful and pretty much perfect.
