Dany and the role of Valyria

I'm just wondering if anyone else has considered this concept:

Currently, with the Iron fleet and Dany converging on the same city she will at last have a fleet large enough to transport her army to Westeros. However, any naval expedition from Slavers Bay must pass around old Valyria.

Am I crazy to think that at some point along the voyage, as the fleet is closest to Valyria, the dragons (and Dany) will feel an urge to go there? She, upon Drogon, could easily reach old Valyria, the ancestral homeland of both her and her dragons. There, in old Valyria, perhaps she discovers some of the old magic and ways to control Dragons. Beyond that, Dany could discover aspects of her ancestors that have been long lost to history: Things Aegon himself didn't even remember. The transformation of Dany that began upon the grassy seas alone with Drogon could be completed in the fires of old Valyria, with her becoming the greatest Dragon lord since the Freehold stretched the continent of Essos.

It makes geographical sense (at least to me), and could serve as a useful plot line in explaining the rest of Dany's transformation.

Thoughts?

I was just thinking the same thing! Perhaps by now, Valyria has cooled down and the 14 Fires are dormant. I know this is a little farfetched, but maybe Quaithe is pointing Danearys to Old Valyria:

To go north, you must journey south, to reach the west you must go east. To go forward you must go back and to touch the light you must pass beneath the shadow

I think by "go back", she means go to Dany's ancient roots, to Valyria: where her ancestors came from. Either way, there're many things she can learn from both places. Perhaps Asshai might have some information on dragonlore among other things. If she does go to Valyria, then she's got an opportunity to learn her history and to grow. I think a visit to Valyria on the way to Westeros will help transform her into an amazing queen and kill the child in her (I'm only referring to Jon Snow's 'kill the boy' i dont mean this literally). I really hope Marting will show us Valyria in the next book.

I was thinking something similar would happen, but in the Shadow Lands Quathe keeps directing her to.

I also think that passing beyond the shadow will make you come out somewhere near the wall. Remember Mance's cloak was repaired with expensive cloth from an Esos ship (I can't remember exactly where from) that had washed up on the western shores of the lands beyond the wall. How the hell did it get there?

Dany heading to Valyria is a very popular theory in the Heresy threads. One of the underlining currents on this train of thought stems from the title of the series (ASOIaF) and since we have Jon Snow sorting out the issues of Ice at the Wall (and I don't think for a moment that he is dead; or at least will not stay dead if he is), for symmetry, we will need Dany to flesh out the issues of fire, presumably in Valyria. What will draw Dany to Valyria (if the theory holds true) is the need to "stamp out" the slave trade.

The notion of going back to Valyria to learn more about her roots and taking a few courses in Dragonbinding 101, would come in handy if she ever does make it back to Westeros. Notice I said "ever does make it back". I really don't care if she never makes it back just as long as she gets the hell out of Slavers Bay.

Anyway, just some general thoughts.

I'm not so sure. Isn't Valyria referred to often as the Shadow? Its never really explicitly said that Quaithe wants her to go to Asshai either. True, she doesn't deny it, but Dany really only assumes thats where she's supposed to go since it lies farthest to the east. Valyria is east too, and on the way to Asshai...

I'm not aware of Valyria ever being referred to as the Shadow whereas Asshai certainly is.Dany is already east of Valyria in Slaver's Bay.

You could argue that Dany has already passed under the shadow as Drogon's shadow passes over her before she mounts him.Martin has said we won't see Valyria except possibly in a flashback.

to pass under the shadow I believe is a reference to visit Asshai. a place qaithe, MMD, and Mel have all been. This visit will probably move her story along. However i do not know if Dany will have time. But dragon flying can drasticly speeed the story along.

  • 1 year later...

I'm so glad someone else thinks this as well. The first time I heard what Quaithe said to her I assumed that "to go forward you must go back" meant returning to the origin of her family.

Where they had plenty of dragons.

Also they talk about the Doom and often mention fires and Dany walked into fire and came out fine I think that link makes sense because not all Targ's could do that.

Meaning she could be the one to bring things from her ancestors homeland that no one else could do. I'm not sure what she could find it could be knowledge it could be items (more valyrian steel?)

Sorry if this makes no sense.
