Hello all,

I am currently studying towards a PhD in Media, Culture and Communication at Keele University. My project title is ‘An online ethnography of the fan community of the A Song of Ice and Fire novels and the Game of Thrones television adaptation’ and my aim is to investigate the history and current practices of the fan community of A Song of Ice and Fire and Game of Thrones.

With the permission of the owners of this website I am initiating this thread to try and encourage discussion about the topic described below. This topic is just one part of a much larger research project, and you may notice other threads around the forum.

An information sheet is available here, which will hopefully address any questions you may have about the research. The information sheet contains information about the research process, and also information about how your posts to this thread will be used. You are under no obligation to take part, however your help in the project would be much appreciated.

By posting in this thread you are agreeing to the statements on the consent sheet which is part of the information sheet linked to above. By posting in the thread you are agreeing that you are over 18.

If you have any queries please let me know.

PS: There is a thread here which you are very welcome to join to discuss the research project or ask questions.

A Game of Marketing

What are your thoughts on the way that the show has been marketed to you as a fan? Cast your mind back to the early campaigns like the Maester’s Path game and the food trucks, think about the more recent things like the free tattoos and the Take the Black Blu Ray launch event, and discuss your opinions (and experiences, if you attended any of the events) here.

Many thanks,
Inevittable

Well I'll jump in and say the sexualisation of the show to get the T and A casual watcher to have a look at it has been evident since season one.

Lots of reviewers wrote about the nudity which in and of itself perpetuated needing more of it.

I'm all for T and A...and D for ladies, when it's needed...

I'm a book first show second person and the marketing for the books "fantasy epic" vs "blood, nudity...story" for the tv show has been interesting to watch.

Good luck in your studies

In Aus GOT is never really marketed on it's own but more in relation to "Showcase" the channel, as Part of the premium movie package as well as Foxtel the subscription TV service overall

With only 30 percent penetration pay TV adds basically consist of football (AFL), football (NRL), Football (Rugby), Football ( A league soccer), Football (EPL), Breaking Bad (formerly), The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones.

At this point in time with the cultural penetration GOT seems to be a commodity rather than a regular product.

in respect the making of blog i see Cat and Bryan more as community outreach to dedicated fans, who I suppose keep the momentum/hype going during periods of media starvation for content.

there are forty one weeks a year between seasons and anyone this and other forums are there fifty two weeks year.

Despite the numbers I've never met anyone who speculates during the off season on what might happen on The Big Bang Theory next year.

It interesting Your Interested in GOT but it makes sense

INMHO Thrones has joined a short list of TV Shows\movies that inspire such fan devotion, and that is main marketing potential of the series,

not whatever the boffins at HBO central cook up for the week before the series premiere, but the number of your friends that have told they MUST watch the show

BTW the books were better , Hollywood can not compare to power of imagination

You study at Keele?! Sweet R'hllor, I go to Keele too! Second year computer science. I don't know you do I? Anyway, I'd be happy to help out with your research if I can. :)

It's a small world isn't it! I don't know any computer types at Keele, so it's unlikely we've met, but drop me a PM with your email address and I'll add you to the list of willing participants. But the first way you can help is to answer the questions above :)

As some others have pointed out the show is often marketed as part of marketing HBO as a channel rather then just specifically Game of Thrones. You'll see glimpses of Game of Thrones scenes in commercials for HBO in between Entourage and other famous HBO shows.

There are exceptions to this of course, for example of something I took part in. I did the create your own house thing that was through HBOs website where you chose your house name and designed your families crest/ sigil. I personally didn't think it was that fantastic but marketing wise I think it was a great idea as I can see fans using the Facebook share option and all that found on the last page after completing their creation.

Ah yes. I used the tool for creating your own house crest to make a front page template for the PowerPoint presentations I give about my work... "House Nevitt: Research is coming". Not all that clever, I'll admit, but it does get a few chuckles from the audience.

I think the marketing for season 4 seems to be dialed back pretty heavily since the first few seasons. I'm thinking back to the Maester's Path gift boxes and the dragon shadow ads. Nothing is really springing to mind for this season, except for the usual trailers and teasers.

I remember a very subtle promotion of the show (in Toronto) in the Medieval Times parade during the Canadian National Exhibition. One of the elements of the children's parade was a plastic castle with the sigils of the Great Houses of Westeros on each side. Very subtle.

Other than that, I don't remember the Maester's Path, I came to the show in the middle of Season 3. I'm not into interactive stuff, I tried the create-your-own sigil once and never did it again. It kills the spirit.
