Helix - new series infecting SyFy Network

My wife and I watched the first two episodes this morning. A search indicated no thread started so I'll kick it off even though I don't know how long I'll stick with it.

Pros: The budget is your typical SyFy-on-the-cheap but it works because it's mostly inside a lab. You would think that someone at this show would realize that no one sane would go outside in those Arctic temperatures with an open coat and hood off, not to mention their face and hands exposed. But the rest of the science is passable and the director does a nice job of tightening the tension. The acting is decent. Not on the level of BSG but certainly better than half of the cast of Agents of SHIELD.

Cons: I think it would be far more interesting if the CDC director was a woman and the infected doctor was her sister, then the hot young thang could be a young man. As it stands there's a lot of sexual stereotyping here and just about every other conversation between women fail the Bechdel Test with impunity. The two villains seem a little cartoony and they need a little more depth to be believable. So far their motivation appears to be just being evil.

I'll give it a little more rein before I decide to cash it in but it better grow in the next few episodes.

Thanks for the reminder. I completely forgot that this was starting.

I'm sure I would have been reminder by incessant advertising when I watch Being Human... ... and Bitten on Monday. :leaving:

I thought there was a thread for it, but it was a general SyFy thread. Helix was just the most talked about show in that thread.

It looks like it could be anywhere between decent and good. Need to see a few more episodes to really be sold though. I do like the idea of trying to cure a strange new disease in a confined space, but I will admit that some of the acting does seem off. I just hope it doesn't end up like Defiance: a solid premise for a show but one that falls flat on its face. I guess what I'm getting at is that Helix has quite a bit of potential but could just as easily end up being bad.

Eh, it's pretty bad.

The only compelling character - partially by virtue of not being an idiot - is Hatake. Part of me wanted to note him as being a Fu Manchu stereotype but now I wonder if the show is actually denigrating the intellect of white people given how the other main characters can't stop fucking up.

I loved the clautstrophobic icy atmosphere of the season 1 huis-clos. Yeah, the season lacked in some parts but the atmosphere and the characters made up to that.

Season 2 is different but quite interesting as well.

Just starting the latest episode, I think we're now entering the second act of the season and things looks promising !

(went quite deep to recover that thread ! ^^)

Last episode was interesting. I really enjoy Kyle's character and, in a true Helix fashion, the scene where he eats the honey was haunting and so absurd !

Julia's path is damn intriguing as well. So she's been to the island in 2015 and met Peter and Anne there... then she comes back 30 years later and I have no idea how that is gonna end or tie in for a potential season 3 with the rest of the plots.

(and hoping I'm not alone to keep watching Helix !)

That would be a bold (and interesting) move for a future season.

I actually think the potential season 3 will kick-in 30 years later (at the time Julia comes back to the island), so by the end of the season, in my opinion, the main characters will be either dead or immortals.

I think the Farragut brothers may be goners but Kyle will become immortal.

Then maybe I'm wrong and both of the brothers will survive, but it would be audacious to kill them off.

I don't feel any particular character is critical to the show so they could quite easily kill off anyone, but they probably need at least one person from each season to continue on the next season. Anyone but Amy. If they don't kill off Amy I don't know if I'd want to continue watching though.

Wow, that was a particulary good (and creepy) episode, imo !

Some great moments :

- Julia / Sarah unlikely teaming.

- The disturbing reveal of Michael's true plans (and the great scene with Peter before that).

- Sergio's fall. He seems quite dead but that wouldnt be the first time he'd escape death.

- Quasimodo / Landry ! ^^

Only saw last week's episode earlier today. The reveal was disturbing, but I thought we already knew his plan was to breed another immortal? It's just the baby farm that is new info.

Damn this show really tries to top itself with weird and sick shit every week.

ETA: Just watched this week's episode.

Spoiler
Argh, the wicked witch is not quite dead yet! The other wicked witch is just as insane! And Peter is the worst!
