Shameless (U.S.) - Season 5

Didn't see a thread for this and nothing came up in search so here we go.

Anyone else watch the premiere last night?

My impressions of it were pretty mixed to be honest. With the lack of Lip and Ian it feels like there's something missing in the show. I know Lip got a bit of screen time but it's mainly the lack of interaction with the rest of the family that I feel will bring the show down a bit for me this season. Not seeing Ian at all was also kind of disappointing but I'm sure he'll be featured in future episodes, since I don't believe the actor has left the show. Lip and Ian have always been my favorite characters, especially when they're on screen together.

Other than that I did enjoy the episode, though Frank's transition from very darkly comedic to just plain depressing and the overall tone of the rest of the episode gave me the impression that this season is going to be a bit further toward the "dark" end of the dark comedy scale.

Looking forward to the rest of the season to see how it goes.

It was just ok.

A little uneventful for a season premiere, I guess V being pregnant was about the only major event. I'm already missing Jimmy, Fiona's new boyfriend is boring, and will never last.

I still want to see something very bad happen to Mandy for what she did to Karen, so I'm holding out hope on that front.

I liked the episode well enough.

With Carl and Debbie reaching a more interesting age I'm assuming they'll feature quite a bit more. I noticed how much deeper Carl's voice got compared to last season.

I agree about Fiona's boyfriend. Unless they're going to make him more interesting, they should get rid of him at least by the end of the season.

Also, watching Sheila eat alone was heartbreaking. Joan Cusack is awesome though.

My thoughts? They don't make tubs of vasaline that big and if they do there should be a law agianst it. Give Carl more to do then piss off the 2nd floor.

I also really can't convey in words how creppy I find the Debbie/Is is he a boyfriend or a serial killer thing

If the gallaghers were tough and hard core as they are always going on about they would have beaten William H. Macy to death years ago and if they couldn't do it on acount of family ties there are probably people in that neighborhood who would do it for free. To be fair though if you didn't have frank you wouldn't have much of a show

I thought Lip getting put in his place in college was a good scene. He's always use to his shit turning to gold...

I assume the new boyfriend is really going to end badly for Fiona. She seemed a little uninterested after sex.

I thought the new episodes were a pleasant surprise. I hated how they ended last season, but I'm hopeful that this season will be another good one. The show was never that good plotwise, I came for the jokes and stayed for the sometimes brilliant acting, especially from Frank and the younger kids.

Seeing Lips roommate with a Stark T-shirt reminded me that the showrunners must be GoT/ASoIaF Fans, there have been other hints to this. They had a guest star with the Night's Watch oath once iirc, and the Alibi Room had a sign up that said "House Targaryen" (actually I think it was supposed to say "House Margaritas", but the set designers cleverly blurred some of it so it looked like it said Targaryen).

Am I seeing things or has anyone else noticed any Westeros references?

The 2 t-shirts are all I've noticed.

This. I also think pop culture has come to the point where I stop getting excited and shouting "Game of Thrones reference!" every time one comes on TV, since the show is literally everywhere.

I agree that there seems to be something missing with Ian and Lip not in Chicago with the rest of the family. Noticed that Debbie and Carl definitely have been bumped up in terms of the prominence in story lines.

From an interview with Fiona on the Showtime website it does indeed appear that

She messes around with her boyfriend's/boss's brother at some point, and things go pear-shaped

Good point. I live in Germany though, and I cant say Game of Thrones has taken over pop culture over here. From what I hear the show is really big over in the US; not so much here, not yet anyway. I mean I see people reading the novels on the subway all the time. But we're not at a point where a Stark T shirt doesnt attract some attention.

Back to topic: I think the Ian resolution shouldnt be long, at least the Gallagher family should be expecting some pay checks or health benefits from his new employer soon shouldnt they?

I live shameless, and about dark comedy that's the WHOLE point of the show, entertainment built from a family with a negligent father who so happens to be a drunk and a family as poor as they come.

I too miss Ian <3 and I kinda miss Steve..... Lol when Fiona's company car windshield was beat by that road rage dude I was dying lmao (back up back up back up) lol

Shameless has been a slightly up-and-down ride from the beginning, while remaining enjoyable even at its lows. Season 1 and 3 were definitely better than 2. And season 4 is looking like another season 2. The only pattern here is the presence/absence of Jimmy. Although he might be gone for good this time, I hope he comes back at some point, as I'm used to him being a part of the show from the start and think the absence of his storyline hurts the overall plot much more than, e.g. Lip being away in college.

As much as I liked Jimmy/Steve and I agree that the show loses some of its charm without him, I honestly can not imagine how they could bring him back. His "bodyguard" gave Fiona cash and told her to forget him, why would he do that if Jimmy was alive? But having said that I would be very disappointed if the question of his disappearance wouldn't come up again at some point (probably when his body is found though, I'm afraid).

The last episode was packed to the brim with squick. Debbie and her way-too-old-and-creepy boyfriend (What the fuck guy she's 13), Frank and his daughter (please don't make him have sex with her to get her to give him her liver...). Not to mention Fiona and the douchebag brother. I already hate that guy.

Regarding the boy Debbie was with, he got major points from me when he didn't respond to her advances. I've heard theories that he's just really lonely and enjoys her company, or he's gay and needs a beard. Time will tell, but he's still a bit creepy.
