Lord Flashheart Posted February 11, 2014 Share Posted February 11, 2014 I noticed we dont have any threads for the various late night shows, and with Jimmy fallon taking over the tonight show it seems there is a good deal to discuss. Like I heard today that Fred Armeson(spelling?) Is going to be his new band leader..does that mean the roots are getting the boot? I hope not. They were one of the few things I liked about that show.Anyhow lets not regulate this to only Jimmy fallons tonight show. My personal favorites are Conan and the late late show with Craig Ferguson.There is also Jimmy kimmel who has some good bits. Letterman who seems like he will never go off the air. Seth Myers taking over the late show on NBC. I think that covers all the us shows. I'm not familiar with any late shows across the pond so maybe someone could enlighten me.Anyhow late shows, who's your favorite? Who do you hate? And are there any specific sketches you love? I'll watch clips of Conan, if he has an interesting guest, online after the fact. I'm just not a big enough fan of the format to actually care to watch any of them regularly. I titled it late night wars because it actually used to be incredibly cutthroat and competitive. The Larry Sanders show does a great job of illustrating it. There was a time when having a funny segment on the tonight show could literally make your career. Nowadays with so many things to watch it doesn't carry the same weight.Eta: if you haven't seen The Larry Sanders Show I suggest watching it. For a show as old as it is it has aged incredibly well. And its fun to see so many of today's celebs in their youth. Its free on this app I found on my Xbox Crackle. You have to watch commercials but its free. I think there was even a bad, straight to television movie, called Late Night Wars about when Dave and Jay were starting out on their shows. Then NBC screwed over Conan O'Brien later for the same gig. And why? Because of the tremendously unfunny Jay Leno. My feelings regarding Jimmy Fallon taking over the Late Night Show are thus soured by the previous experiences of NBC screwing over two people who were more qualified to host than either Jay Leno or Jimmy Fallon. Tony Soprano Posted February 11, 2014 Share Posted February 11, 2014 Even though I've never watched a full episode of any of these shows ( mostly cause they don't air here ), I regularly watch clips of them on their YouTube channel. I've got mixed feelings that Jay's going off the air, to be honest. Even though he wasn't really funny and he's kind of a jerk, I still think he was an okay host. Not as good as Conan, though. If Leno hadn't screwed him over, I'm sure he would have been a much better host than him and Jimmy Fallon. His show's my favorite, I genuinely think he's the funniest late night host. I just wish they uploaded all his monologues like they do with the other shows. Next up is Jimmy Fallon. I like him too, and his sketches are probably the best I've seen on any of these shows. He's funny, and while I do like his sense of humor, I prefer Conan's. I don't think a lot will change with his move to the Tonight Show, except for maybe some more high-profile guests. I'm happy that he's taking The Roots and Higgins with him, they're a pretty big part of what made Late Night so good. I like Kimmel's show too, I guess, but I wouldn't put him in the same league as Conan or Fallon. He's got okay interviews, but to be honest, I mostly watch his sketches where he always acts like a dick and pokes fun at random people. I've only seen a few clips of Letterman's show and he seemed pretty good. Haven't really seen enough to comment beyond that. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Myrddin Posted February 11, 2014 Share Posted February 11, 2014 I'm too old to stay up late enough to watch them. :) Conan is on at 11 here, so I'll watch the beginning 10-15 minutes sometimes before going to bed. I watch Fallon and Kimmel clips regularly on YouTube (and Conan), but never Leno. I watched Letterman back in college, but that was a long time ago. naz Posted February 11, 2014 Share Posted February 11, 2014 I hate Leno, Letterman's gone stale and sour, Fallon is sometimes not annoying, Kimmel's bits are better than his interviews, Conan is the opposite, but Ferguson is the only one I watch regularly (or used to). Ferguson basically doesn't give a shit about the format, satirizes it and does his own thing, and is one of the best interviewers in the business because he doesn't ask scripted questions or kowtow to whatever bullshit movie or show they're plugging at the moment. I watched him for a could of years, and he ruined me on other late night shows for the reasons Naz stated.He's genuinely funny, and just has fun with his guests and audience. I actually was prone to watching more of the Tonight Show when Conan went over there. He remains pretty much my favorite of the late night talk show guys (I rank Stewart and Colbert differently because they're just in such a different format). But now that he's been exiled to TBS, I don't catch him as much as I could/should. I didn't watch a single minute of the Tonight Show when Leno returned to it. I thought what he pulled was absolutely horrible. He had something like five years to prepare for Conan taking over. I'm actually disgusted by the whole process of what is happening now at NBC with all of it too. Nothing agains Fallon, I just am not up that late. But that NBC has given Jay this hero's send off and done nothing to acknowledge that the effed up a few years ago with Conan, that they've elected to let Fallon take the Tonight Show back to New York, after not letting Conan do so. Leno is trite and safe, but popular, and he likes being in the spotlight and never wanted to give up his show. He grudgingly left and then jumped at the opportunity to take it back when Conan wasn't an immediate hit. What's the big deal? How can an outsider possibly get worked up about this?
