Ironborn or Dornish

I realized after reading this thread that nearly every region has come in conflict with the Ironborn before the Targaryens arrived. The only two that haven't seem to be Dorne and the Vale. No surprise that they're the most hated.

Well, the Ironborn DID have the largest kingdom in Westeros before Aegon burned them to smithereens.

I don't really understand why the Dornish conflict is so important. It makes sense historically but I think it's overstated by some of the other characters. I even remember someone (Tyrion?) commenting that the Dornish conflict with the Lannisters over the rape and murder of Elia and her children is less severe than their rivalry with Highgarden -- which, if true, makes the whole thing even more ridiculous. I get that history is important and all, but how do you overlook a freakin pirate invasion or one of the most audacious crimes against your family in recent memory over something as petty as some ancient land dispute that no one alive even remembers?

:agree:

Tyrion says a couple illogical things in ACOK. This is an example, or saying that Stannis with his 5,000 men is a bigger threat than Renly with his 80,000+

It could be because Stannis is more competent and ruthless.

@Red Raven To be fair, the Iron Born really can't sow. That's why the Reader wanted to form an alliance with one of the other factions in exchange for land.

The Martells hate the Lannisters for many good reasons, but all of Dorne and all of the Reach hold an enmity against each other. Look at how the Oakhearts keep tapestries of war that call back to conflicts against the Dornish; An Oakheart member surrounded by Dornish Skulls, another as a Kingsguard Oakheart dying with his king, and a third with another Oakheart blowing a war horn.
