So in this forum I have said that Ned only used Ice for cerimonial purposes. Then when watching one of those Game of Thrones History and Lore segments about Balon's Rebellion, it stated that Ned stormed Pyke wielding Ice. Is there other evidence of Ned wield Ice, besides when he takes of criminal's heads (and Lady's)? And is that History and Lore segment truthful to the books, or based in the books, but edited to fit the show?

I don't think there's any evidence Ice was used in battle in the books. It's taller than Robb in AGOT.

The GoT lore is a separate canon from the books, it's TV show canon. So it was made by people who likely know things about the books, but we have to separate the canons due to the obvious differences. Can't be relied on or used as evidence in any decent book debate.

I guess it would be way too heavy to swing around in battle. Would slow down any man. Ice is meant for chopping of heads and there it has to be heavy. You also have only to swing it downwards. If you would use it like a normal sword, slashing here and there, I guess the physical forces would pull the wielders body too much around and tire him.. But I'm not a professional swordsman ;D

Also the range of it would be weird in battle. Especially storming a castle or any small building/structure.

Anyway, a spiral staircase would've been his death, if he did use ice ;D

It's a sword - it stands to reason that it was used in battle.

Also, keep in mind that we're talking about a Northerner here - they don't really have much use for ceremonial artifacts.

Edit: And keep in mind that even though it was a greatsword, Ice was made from Valyrian steel - which made it lighter than a regular steel blade of the same size.

When storming a castle you are on foot, so using a 2 handed sword makes sense. When riding a horse, if you are not the Mountain using a 2 handed sword is not logical.

Its a Valyrian Steel Sword. Its much lighter then normal steel. I would think wielding it in battle would be much easier. Ned might of been able to use it 1 handed much like Gregor

1. it's vs so it's lighter than a regular great sword which are used in battle

2. Randyll tarly has vs great sword that he uses in battle so it stands to reason Ned would too

I think for Ned to stand a chance against Dayne at the ToJ he must of wielded Ice. There's a theory that maybe Aerys' council sent it back to Ned or Winterfell as a peace offering after Rickard and Brandon's deaths.

Whether it is Valyrian Steel or not makes no difference. Two Handed swords, BidenHanders, late medieval Claymores, are all production weapons meant for fighting wars.

It's hilarious that there is this notion that only the Mountain could wield one when the only unique thing is the way he handled it (one handed, on horse) not that he actually had a two hander.

Ummm, that theory seems like pointless speculation to me. He could have just gotten it back after the Sack, which was before he went against Dayne. Or Rickard left it at WF, and Ned got it when he called the banners.

The range would be a protection, I would think. His blade kills men before they get close enough to hurt him with theirs. Small spaces would certainly be another story though. Not the storming into a castle really, just tiny rooms and corridors. In a great hall he'd have plenty of room to swing.

Usefulness in a spiral staircase would depend on the width of the staircase. ;)

The weight doesn't really matter. He would have grown up using equivalent swords if not training with Ice itself. He'd be conditioned to fight with it as well as any other man would fight with a lighter/smaller weapon. Ned was not written as lanky and weak. The guy had muscle, and he had stamina.

Tower of Joy...yes! We must find this out. It could be extremely important if Ice defeated Dawn. :fencing:

Well it was just a theory I saw on a discussion like this months back, but Ned must've got it back in order to at least engage Dayne in combat.

What is really known about Dayne's sword "Dawn" aside from its unusual color? What kind of sword is it? Is it lighter? Stronger? Sharper? Then a common sword? Was it a Valyrian Steel sword of an unusual color, or made from a meteor?

it's a great sword meaning two handed we know that

It's just as sharp as Valyrian Steel, is pale as 'milkglass', is a greatsword and is made out of an fallen star

Is there any textual evidence of Ned using it in battle?

I think people just want to think it would have been since it's an interesting and iconic sword.

is there any reason to think he didn't it's a good weapon with many particle uses and Ned being Ned why wouldn't he
