How exactly is Craster such an asset to the Knight's watch?

Other than unreliable Intel, why exactly do the Crows put up with him? He's a disgusting human being and an even worse host.

A team of rangers could easily have dispatched him and started running his 'castle', even posing as wildlings in Craster's place with the daughters...

So what's the deal?

What exactly does Craster have other than(Spoilers) White Walkers to sacrifice children to?

Edit: Night's Watch* Augh.

The Night's Watch wouldn't have enough members to occupy Craster's Keep with the three forts @ the Wall already so poorly manned.

And, well, he may be a poor host, but the NW itself isn't known for hospitality, and there is an advanced outpost which is arguably safe.

Lastly, um, I don't think there's ever a mention about any other sacrifice than to the White Walkers. They come during the night when it's horribly cold, or they bring the night and the cold with them, but either way it's sure they show up for the lone kids in the wild. What they do with them exactly, we don't know as of ADwD.

But the real answer is just keep reading. In ASoS you'll get some explanation about Craster, his keep, and why he's there and why live like that.

As said, the watch is scarse. And Crastar might keep his keep, as he is a wildlng. But if nights watch was there there would be constant sieges by wilding raiders and the like, wanting some good steel or fine cloth. Craster gets his battleaxe from the watch afterall, but had the watch held the keep there would be many battleaxies and swords. All ripe for raiding.

Think about it, it is all a matter of supply. The NW's power base is the wall and south of it into the gift where they have farmers and small folk tending to their needs (Well not lately considering the increase in Wildling raids.) everything they are supplied with comes from the south of the wall and is transported by wagon through friendly territory. Think in modern military terms, the Wall is the MSR (Main supply route) and the MLR (Main line of resistance.) there is no place North of the wall that offers nearly as much defense or ease of logistics. In addition the NW is more of special operations unit as opposed to a main combat force, Great rangings like we see in the show/book are rare and seriously challenging tasks that invovle heavy logistics and manpower, it does not happen often. The NW is generally sending out small bands of men to raid and recon the enemy their job is not to project power north of the wall but to hold the wall itself, there is no real reason to maintain any serious power base north of the wall. On top of all that it is just down right dangerous North of the wall, to constantly supply and man a position out there would require a constant supply train through hostile territory. It is easier to just send out small bands than it is to fortify a position NotW (North of the wall.). Craster's keep isnt a defensive position either, it is just a small wooden house surrounded by a pathetic dirt bank. It is a rest stop for Rangers and Craster is someone who can maintain the defence of that place and hes also someone who is in the know, Crasters keep is more than just a rest stop, it is a source of intel.
