Game of Thrones: Long Story Short

Westeros

Recommended Posts

HBO has let us know of a wonderfully-amusing vignette, narrated by Charles Dance, recounting how David Benioff and Dan Weiss came to adapt George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series into Game of Thrones. It’s definitely just a bit on the comedic side:

Very charming! The list of just how many locations, cast members, costumes, and more go into a typical season is a particularly fun set of factoids

I've heard the story before, but this was very charming. Very Wes Anderson. Loved the paper dragon "flying" over the map, the classical music playing in the background, the fanart featured, all of it.

Charles Dance: "I'm Charles Dance. They thought I would be a good narrator."

Weiss: "Mostly because we're terrified of him."

"They received an edict from George's wife." [screen shows "Don't Fuck It Up" in fancy calligraphy.]

The statistic that a given season includes 257 cast members was a bit of a shock. For real?

Yep.

The starring and recurring actors are mostly the same, but there are at least some 150 different actors with speaking roles.

Given the number of countries, people involved, advance planning, and finally the time it takes to make them damn thing, I'm always surprised at how good the show is and I feel that when they produced the pilot all those years ago, it probably was with the understanding that people had read the books or were going to figure this stuf out on their own and that's not really how tv works. You have to explain the basics to people either visually or through dialogue (preferrably the former though). Plus, devoting 7 years of your life to do this thing at least shows a lot of devotion.
