ASOIAF Characters - 7 Slots - Good to Evil in descending order

Recommended Posts

It seems that, at least most of the character's in this series don't fall neatly in to the categories of Good and Evil. Most appear to be extremely conflicted. Capable of good and or evil at different points of their respective arcs. I think this is what makes them all so compelling. I thought it would be interesting to create a sort of spectrum, with characters in the positions left (evil) to right (good). For the purpose of this exercise we will create 7 vacant slots to filled. For example:

1. Brienne

2. Ned

3. Jon Snow

4. Tyrion

5. Sandor Clegane

6. Joffrey

7. Ramsey

Oooh, Fun.

Brienne I could see being good, but she also follows rather blindly and is relient on her code for morality as Jaime points out. If you're bound to follow someone like Cateyn's orders, and they order you to do something wrong (ie, kill that baby) then Brienne very well might kill a baby, although it conflicts with points of her other code. I really liked the debates her and Jaime had about the traps of the code.

1. Jon Snow, Bran, Hodor :D, Robb

2. Tyrion, Ned, Mance, Stannis

3. Arya, Jaime, Daenarys

4. Theon, Cersei

5. Roose Bolton, Tywin

6. Little Finger, Walder Frey

7. Ramsey, Joffrey

I mixed it up with characters who have clear interpersonal conflict, like Jon hating being treated as a bastard, but at the same time loyal to his family, or Arya always wanting to do right but having had a very rough life where right and wrong get highly convoluted.

1. Are the people who follow a moral compass and when they have to do wrong it's usually for a greater good, like Jon being a traitor to save the Night's Watch and in his mind all of Westeros. Or much of Robbs decisions as King of the North.

2. People who do good things, or do bad things willingly but it then eats them up. Stannis and Ned were both unwavering in their moral terpitude even when it would have been the best thing to do for everyone, like confronting Cersei and having her removed before she could buy off the guard.

3. Arya is kind of in a league of her own. I don't want to make a moral judgement on when killing is right or wrong. Is killing a murderer wrong? Or killing in war wrong? Arya isn't always good or bad but much of what she does is justice.

4. Theon and Cersei. Hate both of them, but they both were doing bad things for the sake of other people. Cersei's character has become almost a she-wolf for her children and if you look at her actions most of what she has done was for them. Theon was trying to find approval from other people. He captured Winterfell to both prove to one father (Balon) that he was a strong Greyjoy and to prove to another father (Ned) that he could rule. Bad things but almost positive motivations.

5. Roose Bolton. Kind of the ultimate realist and hard to place in here because Roose never cared about good and evil. He didn't do good things because they were right, he did them because they were useful and the same for bad things. He didn't harm just to be harmful, everything had a purpose and he didn't bat an eye about doing things good or bad. Tywin was similar, and even had a moral code (everything for the family and honor) but his pride made him very hurtful to people like Tyrion and in the end you find out he did have a few pleasure he took for himself.

6. Little Finger and Walder. Both without morality and everything they do they do for themselves. However, they don't go out of their way to do bad things usually. Their "badness" always has a clear goal in mind.

7. Reseved for the people who go out of their way to do bad things and often their infractions serve no purpose other than self indulgence.

Edit: Came back to add Jaime and Daenarys both in with Arya. Those three are the most dynamic characters in the whole series and some of the best chapters to read. Jaime has done plenty of wrong, but he's not a bad person. The PoV of the first three books might have you believe such but as you get into his reasoning you find out much of what he's done was either for love (having sex with his sister), good natured (Tyrion's 'whore' to make him feel like a man and come out of his shell), or the book points out his greatest sin was also his greatest good, kingslaying to save a city.

Daenarys... You either love or hate her it seems. Her and Stannis are the two character people either tend to really like or really hate. Alot of people think she'll make an excellent Queen but she lets her emotions get in her way. As much as she's freed Slaver's Bay she has also brought more death and turmoil to that area than anything else because she wanted to "help" but cbf to do it properly or stick around. She also has won mostly by deceit. First city was won by turning her newly bought soldiers on the master's as soon as a bargain was stuck, which doesn't honor the trade. She also gave a dragon and took it right back. Second city was won partially by saying "you have till tomorrow night to make a decision," sending them home with wine to get them drunk, then killing the sellswords in the night saying something like "I said you had till tomorrow to make a decision. I didn't say I wouldn't kill you tonight." And the third city was a little more legit but she won by sending her two advisors through the sewer to open the gates as punishment, but even after Jorah helps her she says she doesn't forgive him and sends him on his way. She's caring, but not always good.

1. Tommen (he hates beets. That's positively angelic)

2. Brienne/Ned (it's a toss up)

3. Tormund Giantsbane

4. Sandor "the Hound" Clegane (he's just misunderstood, guys!)

5. Roose Bolton (because the gods only know what his angle is)

6. Joffrey (needs some therapy and heavy meds)

7. Ramsay (needs a straight jacket and a padded room)

Prologue/epilogue characters:

1. Cressen

2. Will

3. Pate

4. Kevan

5. Merrett

6. Chett

7. Varamyr

The last two are up to debate, as I barely remember Chett's POV, other than his general nastiness. Probably didn't eat any babies, though, so Sixskins wins out there.

1. Joanna

2. Myrcella/Tommen

3. Tyrion

4. Joffrey/Kevan

5. Jaime

6. Cersei

7. Tywin

Huh? What do we even know about Joanna (I assume you mean Lannister) that makes her better than little kiddies? Joffrey at same level as Kevan and better than J&C? /confused/

Not trying to be insulting but to start a debate.

I pretty much agree 100% with this assessment. I would also include (f)Aegon in likely list 3 since I feel he has the best intentions even if he is just Illyrio and Varys' pawn I would also classify further like this:

1. Pure Good: Tommen (so innocent and precious), Shireen

2. Samwell, Myrcella,

3. Jorah, Barristan,Quentyn, Theon

4. Amoral (mainly players of the game of thrones): Arianne(she thinks), The Tyrells (pretty much the whole scheming family), Sansa, Tycho Nestoris

5. Bran, Asha, Aeron

6. Pyat Pree, Arya (she is getting there)

7.Pure Evil: Patchface

Rare that I find a list like this and think "I wouldn't move a single entry." Nicely done.
