According to this article (title: 'Multiple 'Game of Thrones' Movies Eyed by George R.R. Martin) GRRM would like to end the series with a big budget movie to wrap things up.

He also says that there are talks about doing the D&E prequels as feature length films.

So, what do you have to say about this? Yeah or Nee?

I say he's trying to buy himself some time. HBO bought the film and TV rights to ASoIaF, so they decide whether or not to make the movies. Dunk and Egg is great, but it happens too far in the past for prequels.

I've seen so many things that are probably all just publicity stunts that I'm going to instantly add it to the list unless someone from HBO claims that they could do it. I can't remember the last time HBO made a "blockbuster" movie.

I'd go and see it in Theatres and I usually only see one or two movies in theaters( they come out three movies later on Blu-ray anyway right?)

I think this is just another way GRRM is trying to say "I'm not going to get the books finished before the show catches up to me but I'm not ready to admit it yet" between the lines.

does Sex and the City count as a blockbuster?

the only reason i'd like to see a big budget movie is so we get bigger scale battles. but that's the only advantage i can see.

Not gonna' happen. There's a big difference between what HBO did with the Sex & The City films (which were released several years after the series had ended, and acted more as an epilogue than an ending to the story) and the upcoming Entourage film (which will act in much the same way as the aforementioned) than with Game of Thrones.

They aren't going to have seven or eight years of build-up on the show, only to tell their subscribers that they now have to go to the movies to see how it all ends. The Dunk & Egg series is a possibility, but I just don't think the interest is there for a feature length theatrical film there, either.

This is just Martin being all 'blue sky' and what not.

In addition, I am not sure that there is enough story in the individual books to feed a feature film. They do indeed have a lot of exposition that is interesting and probably relevant to the upcoming storylines. But of course, if you can make 3 full length movies out of The Hobbit, you could beef D&E up too.

It looks like the cracks are widening between GRRM and D&D, it's weird how they managed to convey totally different expectations on record. The man seems to be under the impression that "as the books get bigger", the show is going to preserve its complexity and give him time to get the books out, but that seems unlikely. Either he is in for a rude shock or TWOW is complete and he is toying with us for being horrible people :D

I would picture it as part of the last book. There would be plenty of material. So much is actually cut out or downsized in the TV version.

The TV series could take the story most of the way, but the movie could be the final war for the dawn. It would be the most complex in terms of special effects and with all that magic would make a fabulous 3d movie

Based on the Rome movie they've been trying (and failing) to make for seven years and the Deadwood movie they've been trying (and failing) to make for even longer, I would not put much hope in this happening.

I would be furious if GoT intentionally didn't show the real ending.

Most post-series feature films are re-incarnations (Brady Bunch), endings due to premature cancellation (Firefly), or essentially epilogues (Sex and the City). Telling us a plan like this now would make the omission of an ending pre-meditated and that leaves a foul taste in my mouth.

I pay for HBO.

That is why I see it as part of the last book, not the whole last book

A movie without a beginning, with multiple storylines and characters appearing for 10 minutes?

Who is going to pay for a movie like that, if they have to watch 7 seasons to be able to understand a thing?

Essentially, this. It's a terrible idea.

Anyway, no way in hell would HBO let the thrilling finale to one of their most successful and talked about series not be aired on their network - especially if the show is to surpass the book. That will be marketing heaven for them.
