Casting Outrage Hypocrasy

Why were so many people upset that the show cast a guy who's skin color wasn't dark enough (Oberyn Martell) in the books, but nobody mentions that Salaadhor Saan was a Lyseni pirate (a white guy) but they cast him as a black guy and nobody made a sound?

I say hypocracy, After watching the show I can't imagine Salaadhor Saan any other way than the man who played him. Let's just let the guy who plays Oberyn be Oberyn. I kind of like the Spanish-European aspect of him. It reminds me of Inigo Montoya from the Princess Bride . Idk if I'm late to the party or beating a dead horse with this topic anyways. Thoughts?

People were complaining about Oberyn's skin color? I don't get it. He seems to have the perfect appearance of the role (though I don't much like his hair). But he looks perfectly Dornish to me.

Omg. Poor Pedro Pascal. Especially since i think hes gonna nail Oberyn judging from the trailers and promos. Im not a fan of the hair either but everything else works. It boils my beans people got UP IN ARMS about his casting.

I think people who care too much for this sort of thing need to take a chill pill. As long as the actor does a good job who cares?

No. Lie. It actually feels more racist to draw attention to someone being the "wrong" skin color for a character. Like, ok Idris Elba as Heimdall in Thor films. I have no beef cuz holy shit does he kick ass as that character. But jimmies were rustled in the comic fandom. Pfffffffff

Oh yeah, sending a raven to da mods to send this thread where it belongs.

I'm not bothered by it and i think he looks tanned enough to pass for salty Dornish. If they had cast a Scandanavian-looking guy I would be annoyed, but they haven't and I'm not. Who cares about his skin colour if he plays the character well? Besides, he has an accent, so he is different to other Westerosi based on that alone.

That is because that man is irrelevant compared to the Martells. And a lot of people envisioned The Dornish people as south-asian. Plus he is not portrayed in that positive light is he? He said he wanted to rape Cersei.

He didn't want to rape her, he wanted to fuck her.

It's because there's a shortage of non-white characters in the show and in TV overall, which really stinks. Casting a white actor as one of very few prominent non-white characters (I thought he was kinda brown in the books?) is a lost opportunity to connect to a larger audience, a particularly bad problem in the fantasy genre. I personally would have really liked to see this guy as Oberyn: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0164929/

Isn't counting the number of people of different races in the show racist in itself? I loved the casting decision, I could see your guy being him as well. The point of the OP was people only care about race going in one direction, and caring about race at all is racist on its own.

But Oberyn isn't that dark in the books, so the casting would be "wrong" yet there probably wouldn't have been a strong reaction like there was. I consider that a double standard like OP does.

Salladhor Saan and Xaro Xhoan Daxos on the show are both Summer Islanders who emigrated to Lys and Qarth respectively.

GRRM has clarified that the salty Dornish are "Mediterranean" in appearance, and by that he means this.

No, trying to put more people on the show just because they're a different color is racist.

Except it is kind of obvious that the Dornish people aren't white. For one they eat Pita and hummus which both of things come from the middle-east. Plus it said they have olive skin, brown eyes and black hair. You could easily cast them as brown people. In fact a lot of people envisioned them as South-asian.
