Did they just cut Randyll Tarly?

He was most recently mentioned in 3x8 by Sam himself, so this would make it the third episode he's been referenced, the first being in 1x4, the second in 2x1 and then this in season 3. A single character being referenced consistantly over three seasons leads me to believe he will in fact show up at some point in the show. He might well end up being very important to the events in King's Landing with recent developments having happened there at the end of A Dance with Dragons.

I must've missed the fact that he absolutely has to be in season 4 in order to exist? What does he do in ASOS, again?

He doesn't do anything in Storm, in fact I don't think he even appears in that book, but since season 4 will delve into Brienne's Feast storyline, and he has a memorable cameo appearance in that book, maybe some people think he should have been cast.

He's not important, but, hey, his son is a major character, so they might as well name drop him a few times just in case he does become important later on so people don't think they're pulling it out of their asses. And then, when we're talking about minor characters, the first people to get chopped are the ones that require more than a line or two of explanation. At this point if a character showed up and introduced himself as Randyll Tarly, boom, the character is already established. So they might keep him in the story for flavor.

I believe Tarly will be an important player in the last two books, and hope he'll appear in the show later on. There's really no reason to have him pop up this early if he doesn't do anything, so I could see them holding off on introducing him until season 5.

He could very well show up this season, too. Just because we haven't heard anything of him being cast, he could still appear. Brienne and Pod should have something to do between E04 and E08, not just riding around. He could appear somewhere in those episode, even if it doesn't look like it atm.

maybe he could have had a role to play this season if they are accelerating brienne's plot line, but i imagine it could easily be held off for another season, i wouldnt start thinking he's been cut altogether at this point, more if he doesnt appear in seasons 5 or 6.He's been mentioned several times throughout seasons, so I guess there's a good chance he will show up, although maybe he might end up being a composite of the several tyrell/lannister lords that appear on the small council at that time

Doesn't Tarly end up as Hand by the very end of ADWD? Or, at least, there's a suggestion that he might end up as Hand. I can't remember.

By the way, my pick for Tarly is this guy I saw playing Malcolm Tucker's lawyer in The Thick Of It:

He very much looks the part, I reckons.

Kevan told Cersei that Tarly would be a good hand of the King, but Cersei refused. When Kevan takes over as regent, Tarly ends up on the small council, but not as hand.

I don't expect him to be cast based on what he's done in the books so far. His interaction with Brienne is interesting and I'd like to see it, but doesn't lead to anything. My guess is that either Mace turns out to be considerably less stupid than portrayed so far, or that Margery is able to be the brains behind Mace. With Mace in the capital, Tarly isn't necessary for the Kings Landing story. The Tyrells are tricksy, it suits them to have everybody underestimate Mace.

And Sam is definitely not going to send Gilly to live with his family in the show.

Janicia, that works as long as Margaery stays alive. If she bites it, she won't be the brains behind Mace any more. Of course I'm getting ahead of things here because they're at least one season (maybe two) away from her trial.

That's a good point. But if Margery dies, things change dramatically for the Tyrells anyway. Without Margery, they would probably try to abandon the Lannisters and make peace with whoever looks most powerful. Olenna could re-emerge, Mace could rise to the occasion, or the family could just come to a quick ruin. They're in a lot of trouble if they lose Margery in the show, especially if Loras is injured in season 5.

I'm really curious what happens with the Tyrells in season 5. I'd love to see Margery in prison from an omniscient or Margery POV. There is a theory that Loras' injury was faked to get him out of active service in Kings Landing; I'm not expecting to see that play out on screen, but I'm really curious what plotting they will engage in.

It would be neat if Tarly showed up, but he might just be lost in the noise even if he did have a scene with Brienne and then showed up in the capital at the end of season 5. It was easy to miss the connection between the guy Robb found at Harrenhal to the guy that patched Jaime up to the guy that now works for Cersei if you weren't looking for it.

Not sure anyone looks more powerful than the Lannisters at the moment, save the Tyrells. Stannis is not a suitable ally and the North is beaten.

There's the Vale, but that is run by LIttlefinger...Olenna and Littlefinger? :D
