Best TV Show Ever?

Dante's Girl

Today's Los Angeles Times has a review of Game of Thrones that claims it's the Best TV Show Ever (yes, in capital letters!):

A bit over the top, I think, even for fans. There's an accompanying article about filming the show, and it has a description of rehearsing a fight scene between Jon Snow and an "unknown" opponent, suggesting that revealing the name of the opponent would be a spoiler. Who might that be?

Ygritte? A renegade Night's watch brother at Craster's?

Well it's my favourite TV show, but I don't watch TV much. Calling it the best ever is certainly a stretch.

As for Jon's unknown combatant, we know that he's fighting

Styr

from promotional videos.

I don't watch much TV (the only other dramas I've seen all the way to the end are 'Breaking Bad' and 'LOST'), but Game of Thrones is definitely my favorite. I'm probably speaking prematurely (I've heard unending hype for 'The Sopranos' and 'The Wire,' both of which I'm planning to watch when I find the time), but I really don't think you can dismiss it easily. It's pretty damn good.

I don't see why it's so crazy. It's very expensive, probably one of the most quotable, and becAuse it has the books can set up and foreshadow events on a scale that only lost and to a lesser extent the wire have attempted, the former being unsuccessful, and the latter being successful but on a less complex scale.

Personally, I think television lends itself better to comedy than drama.

I find many highly rated dramas like The Wire, The Sopranos, Boardwalk Empire, etc... to be overrated. That is not to say they are bad, in fact I enjoy most of them, but I don't think they live up to the massive hype. I'd put Game of Thrones in the category, a good show, but not the mind-blowing experience some reviewers and fans would have me believe. Breaking Bad is the only recent drama that I felt lived up to its reputation.

But, it is subjective. What is the best or worst to me may not be the best or worst to someone else.

To this day I'm trying to understand what was so great about Breaking Bad.

I think it's unfair to compare it with Sopranos or The Wire. Most great TV shows are either specific creations for TV or adaptations of stories that are not nearly as difficult as adapting ASOIF. Think about the sheer complexity of this show, in terms of number of actors, dressing, CGI, locations, story lines, etc. That's why I think the show deserves significant praise despite its flaws. In fact, most flaws that are pointed here are not TV related but only thorough comparisons with the books. I understand they have to simplify things occasionally, since the overwhelming majority of the viewers did not read the books and even in its simplest form the story is already complicated. I also believe many changes are due to technical reasons and not just D&D taking liberties.

In terms of plot quality and production value, it's certainly up there in some of the best TV shows. Some of the shots are better than half the stuff you see in movies these days or certainly at the same level.

I wouldn't go so far to call it the 'best show ever' as that's a matter of individual opinion but it definitely stands on its own in the sense that it goes where other TV shows don't- killing off main characters making the series more unpredictable and realistic to history and human nature (despite being fictional).

My only problem is that I like sitting down with family and friends while watching TV shows (makes it more enjoyable as it is shareable) but GOT is as awkward as hell to do that with....yeah, it's literally watching porn with family and friends sometimes. :ack: The explicit/nudity scenes are admirable in the sense that they portray human nature, character development and the power play involved in the politics and lifestyle of westeros but some of them cheapen the show and are unnecessary (e.g. Littlefinger talking about his background in S1 while two whores are making out on the sofa...yeah, I don't think anyone was paying attention to him). That being said I don't think these scenes are bad but I just wish the show wouldn't go over the top with them (creating ones that don't exist in the books while taken away from precious character development time).

Anyway, turning the books into a TV series was definitely a wise choice. However, the TV show doesn't compare to the books (very few adaptations of books do) but it's satisfying seeing those books come to life on the screen and the actors are all great.

It's certainly right up there. It'd be hard to judge it completely until it comes to a conclusion. It's debatable that shows like the Sopranos and Breaking Bad were able to deal with characters better, as some may find GOT a little too hard to follow, although the series has some superb character in it's own right. In regards to scope, the Wire is the only thing I've seen that's on the same level as it.

Yeah, the only legitimate and major complaints I've seen pretty much amount to "the books were better." Viewed on its own, it really is a spectacular show, and is easily up there with what are hailed as the best of all time.

I completely agree but that's to be expected. You get it with every book to screen adaptation.
