Are book readers too sadistic with those who only watch the show?

Recommended Posts

I'm a good guy. I do not spoil stuff and even when people ask me stuff I try to satisfy them without giving too much away.

I don't watch the TV show, but I decided to head to youtube and search for the Red Wedding (kind of disappointed, actually). But then there was this comment:

It looks like Season 4 will give the good guys some form of comeback. We got that new guy Oberyn Martell, who looks like will kick some major ass. Without spoiling anything, everybody should definitely watch the next episode.

I'm sadistic, I give all of my non reading friends and co-workers wrong info deliberately.....like saying to them "ohh don't worry about Robb, he has a part to play for a long time" (2 weeks before the Red Wedding chapter)

I still can't say Unsullied with a straight face, calling them Eunuch warriors is pretty damn funny. My insightful brother and sister are both Eunuch warriors, and I already told one of them about poor ol' Jon and Oberyn's unfortunate and accidental department.

I have a lot of fun with Dany though, for some reason every body likes her.

To say nothing about the Imp.

And, a common phrase that I use, in before lock!

I've completely hyped Oberyn among my Unsullied friends. The more they love him the more I tell them about how great he is.

So have I, and with good reason. :)

I guess I am a bit "sadistic" with the Unsullied when it comes to certain events, like Ned's execution, the Red Wedding, the upcoming Purple Wedding and Viper vs Mountain :P I like watching their reactions.

No. A Storm of Swords has been out for 14 years.

Sorry, but that's the dumbest argument I think I've ever heard. As if people have no excuse not to have read a series of obscure fantasy novels before they were adapted into a popular HBO show.

I usually turn my friends away from wild predictions (e.g "Khaleesi's coming to Westeros this season!" or "Arya's totally gonna ride in and kill Joffrey!") by bringing them down to earth with the realities of what's going on in the plot at the moment, but I don't really give them any pointed clues or hype up certain plot elements: I like them to experience the story with an unbiased perspective.

I'm not sure about 'dumbest argument ever', but I agree that the age of the book shouldn't dictate whether it's OK to spoil the show. As a former unsullied, I'll tell you that it's incredibly annoying to have someone not only spoil an upcoming plotline but then justify it with "read the books".

Giving away the plot to a 10-year old movie is completely different than doing it for an upcoming episode of TV based on a 10-year old book. The former is socially acceptable, the latter just makes you a dick.

It was only obscure if you can't read. All five books were NYT best sellers. His work was featured in major newspapers before the show even aired. Your argument only holds water if the entire fantasy genre was obscure, and that's full of holes given the continued success of series and movies like WoT, LOTR, and others over the last, I don't know, 70 years?

And there was a reason why I said Storm of Swords and not AGoT, which has been out almost 20 years. A massively popular show has been on the air for over 3 years, and the source material is is available and on the Best Sellers list (for the 2nd time). I don't go out of my way to spoil it for people. My girlfriend hasn't read the books.

If that's the dumbest argument you've ever read, well you've never been in a "Tyrion is a Targ" or similar threads on the board.

I agree and I find it annoying that some people have this compulsive need to spoil the books or shout "Read the books, people" on every Internet thread. I personally love reading but I get that it isn't for everyone. Some people don't have the time or patience, especially when you have a giant, dense and incredibly detailed novel series like A Song of Ice and Fire. I love watching the show with my Unsullied friends and love seeing their reactions or getting a fresh perspective from them. Of course, I love being a smug bastard with things like the Red Wedding where I can be like: "Yeah...bet you didn't see that one coming!" but I love watching them discover these things on their own and I'm excited to see their reactions to the forthcoming episode.

I just like being there to clarify background info for them like Robert's Rebellion, all the major Targaryens and remind them of little clues the show included that they might miss out on. I'm always recommending rewatches and paying full attention (nothing drives me crazier when I see them play with their iPhones during certain sequences).

YouTude comments are dark and full of spoilers

The top comment earlier today for Episode 2's preview on YT was "joffrey dies", with something like 164 thumbs up (obviously exploited).

I just don't get it. Hate it just as much as watching book readers try and influence Unsullied opinions on a character.

Of course we are ! We have read the books and they havent ! We can only have an ounce of sadism in us ! ^^

It's our job not to be mean about it, but deep down, there is obviously a pervert pleasure at watching them discover the show when we know what's gonna happen and they dont !

There is?

Yeah, I don't get it either. I have Unsullied friends who beg me to tell them what happens next and I simply refuse because I know that down the line they'll appreciate it.

And if they just need to get their spoiler fix, they can always google.
