I don't think it was that big a departure from the book story.

Maybe it will depart a bit in the future but IMO it was OK.

Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if they fast tracked Dany's storyline this season. They did say there was a ridiculously expensive scene in the last episode that was more so than any other has been. Dany riding off on Drogon? Only problem with that is that they'd (presumably) have to fill out her Winds material, since that would involve her being absent from Meereen from pretty much all or most of next season.

Maisie in her interview with Rory a few weeks back said she hadn't read the books, not sure how she can make that judgement about whatever tweaks are made will confuse the book readers. It's okay Maisie, we've understood and adapted to the changes that have been made so far, I'm sure we'll be fine.
