Names and meanings

I have an obsession w/ name meanings, and here a few I've discovered from ASOIAF:

Aegon:

Egon: edge of a sword (German)

Self-explanatory

Aerys:

Eris: strife (Greek)

Ares: bane, ruin; male (Greek)

Sums up the Mad King pretty well, dontcha think?

Naerys:

Nerys: lady (Welsh)

Targ queen; actually the "ae" and "ys" found in Targ names are common in Welsh

Visenya:

Visnja: sour cherry (Serbo-Croat)

Fits w/ Visenya's personality

Joanna: God is gracious (English/Latin/Greek/Hebrew)

Jaime:

James: supplanter (English/Latin/Greek/Hebrew)

Jaime supplants Robert

Tyrion:

Tyrone: sovereign, king (Greek); land of the noble (Irish)

Maybe Tyrion will end up lord of CR!

Kevan:

Kevin: kind/gentle/handsome + birth (English/Irish)

Kevan is a kind man of "gentle" (noble) birth--but he's not handsome. Actually I think "Kevan" (or Kevin) is a terrible name for a Lannister, or any medieval-world character.

Tommen:

Thomas: twin (Aramaic)

Tommen is the product of twincest.

Arya: honorable, noble (Sanskrit)

Arya starts out aspiring to be this--how will she end up?

Garlan:

Garlin/Garland: triangle-shaped piece of land; land of the spear; prize; wreath

Garlan is a skilled warrior from a wealthy landowning family specializing in horticulture

Margaery:

Marjorie: pearl

Loras:

Laurus: laurel (Latin)

Knight of the Flowers in search of glory (laurels)

Garth: garden (Norse)

Founder of House Gardener

Robert: bright fame (Norman/Germanic)

Robert in his youth

Shireen: sweet (Persian)

fits the character's personality

Brienne:

Brian(ne): high, noble (English/Irish)

Brienne is one of the few nobles who's actually noble. And she's freakishly tall.

What do you think of my etymologies?

Awesome! I actually posted this in another thread, but since it fits perfectly here, I'd like to repost if you don't mind...

In a moment of boredom, I googled "the meaning of the word hodor". Mostly all I came up with where references to the ASoIaF character (of course) but eventually found that it was also listed as a last name.

Under meanings & origin it says:
Polish and Slovak: from the eastern Slavic personal name Chodor, a vernacular form of Teodor (see Theodore).

So then I check out the meaning of the name Theodore at a some baby names websites. Theodore means "divine gift", "God's gift", or "godly" depending on which site you're looking at. Incidentally, there's another character whose name is associated with Theodore. Not that it isn't obvious, but I'll say it anyway...

Theon.

Does it mean anything? Probably not. Total stretch, absolutely. But it's a fun coincidence!

Oh, and another fun coincidence... I looked it up the day after 402 premiered on HBO and the baby name of the day was Joffrey. Ha!

P.S. I love baby name websites. I've obsessed over the meanings of names every time I've been pregnant!

I love Etymology! Here's a few more:

Catelyn

Derived from Katherine, in Greek it means "torture."

Meera

Slavic; meaning "peace"

Stannis
Stan, meaning "stand, become"

Petyr

Peter, meaning "stone."

Sam

Samuel, "God has heard."

Joffrey

Jeffrey, has meanings "stranger" "hostage" and "territory." Interesting.

Selyse

Sileas, form of Cecilia. It means "blind." That totally fits!

Osha

From the biblical Hoshea meaning "salvation."

Daario

From Darius, "to possess."

Oberyn

Form of Oberon, possible form of Alberich, meaning "power."

Sandor

Form of Alexander, meaning "to defend."

Podrick

Form of Patrick, meaning "nobleman"

Petyr=Peter=stone: House Baelish's original sigil, the stone titan of Braavos. Also the stone giant Sansa destroys in the Ghost of High Hill's vision is IMHO Baelish.

As for Daenerys, as far as I know no one has ever pointed out that the Romans had a silver coin called the Denarius. Daenerys is a silver-haired descendant of Old Valyria, i.e. Rome.

From the Hebrew name בִּנְיָמִין (Binyamin) which means "son of the south" or "son of the right hand".

Eris isn't just the goddess of strife, she's Chaos & Discord too. All fits Aerys quite well I think. as far as descriptive words go

have to be honest though as its my daughters name I don't like to ascociate the mad king with Eris. so I try & pronounce it Air-is.

eris was the greek Godess who threw the apple of Discord into the room declaring the most beautiful of the godesses present should claim it. leading to the Trojen war.
