Joffrey, the first of his name - Appreciation thread

The Kinkslayer

Recommended Posts

In occasion of the purple wedding I'm starting an appreciation thread for the runner-up of the war of the 5 kings: Joffrey of houses Baratheon and Lannister, Joff, child of three, the most notorious great bastard of the 7 kingdoms.

The nicest things that are known of Joffrey is that he wasn't sickly and that he was tall for his age, but let's ponder this a little: Joff was a monster because of the way he was raised, or is really the nature of bastards product of incest wanton and treacherous?

Poor Joff, 3 (simultaneous) treasons did he know, once for blood (Sansa) and once for gold (Littlefinger) and once for love (Olenna),

Poor boy king, child of storm, from the cup of ice did he drink, from the cup of fire did he drink, yet he was killed in the house with red keep.

He never cheated on any woman. He lived and died a virgin.

He was too kind-hearted to ever take direct part in serious combat.

He was more economically judicious than Robert.

He did not kill Tommen or Myrcella which is better than Ramsey.

He dared to annoy Tywin.

He was not always too easily manipulated by Cersei.

He was still young and yet to reach his full potential.

He recognized Sansa's masochistic tendencies and contrived a situation that allowed her to live out her fantasies while remaining innocent of anything. Poor boy meant well, he only erred in identifying what her actual fantasies were.

Runner-up? By all means he won

Stannis simply surviving doesn't make him the winner

And how he was raised had much more to do with his problems than the genetic problems presented by incest, as we can see that Tommen and Myrcella are well-adjusted individuals. Cersei's poisonous nature is mostly the cause, followed by Robert's neglect

This would be an interesting PoV to look at. In a way GRRM could have made his actions just as justifiable as Dany's.

He had initiative.

He had great sense of justice.

He took his own wise decisions, like killing traitors instead of letting them live and keep plotting against him.

I think we should compare Joff ordering to behead Ned to the "Ed, fetch me a block" of Jon. Two great moments of justice.

He had a marvelous sense of humor.

He actually was trying to avoid Tommen getting toxoplasmosis from those lousy cats.

He had a deep sense of family. Even as Stannis and Renly were calling him nasty things, he kept thinking them as his dear uncles. He even had the idea to make sullen Uncle Stannis smile
