Will the new Sandor be as great of a character as the Hound?

Rhaenys Reborn

According to the Elder Brother, the Hound is dead, Sandor Clegane is at peace.

If we agree that is means Sandor is still alive, but he's not the Hound anymore, he's probably gone through some kind of catharsis that gentled him up. And while on one hand it makes me happy that he might have found a way to silence his inner rage and give comfort to his damaged, troubled soul, on the other hand it made me wonder if I'll like the new Sandor as much as I love the Hound.

The thing I love the most about the Hound as a character is the fact that I could never entirely figure him out. Is he a good guy, a bad guy? He is, after all, a brutal killer and an alcoholic, but at the same time he had that famous gentleness with Sansa and he did protect both Stark girls. The Hound is a complicated, conflicted character with so much depth and so many hidden feelings. I love that about him. And I am kind of afraid the new gentled up Sandor will hardly be as interesting, because he will not be as complex and comflicted anymore.

Any thoughts?

I think he is dead. Death gave him peace he never had in life. I also like his character. At first he seems totally evil but it's hard not to feel sorry for him and sympathise with him by the end.

But yeah I think he's dead too and if he still lives as the gravedigger he probably found his peace. Mainly because he finally could get free of his life in submission.

Assuming he is alive(which i really hope so), i think it will be really refreshing to see this character evolution to a different persona, Lancel for instance, had an epiphany that was really unexpected and imo gave a new dimension to the character, depending how Martin approaches it, i think we might see some pretty interesting changes, that will still keep the character as fascinating as before.

HIs story arc isnt over. He might be dead if this was real life and even if we know GRRM try hard to be realistic, this is still a book serie. He has to do at least 1 of those things before dying for real:

1-Kill Gregor, since he said if someone has to kill Gregor it will be him
2-More subtle but: Kill UnCat. Arya's last words to the Hound was: "You should have saved my Mother." Guess what, she might still be saved, by the same gift Arya refused to give him, Death. Cat is a vengeful zombie and her soul deserves to be rest in peace.
3-Save Sansa, she feared the monster, now that he got rid of it, she will follow him.

He could not keep going as he was. Sansa was the catalyst for change.

He is still Sandor. Is he going to not curse and be unintentionally funny and biting and sarcastic. Hell no. Why? He is atoning for sins and is trying to fix himself. Why would he not have some of the same personality as before? For chrissakes, he is not Gregor who become a Frankenstein type of er, whatever the hell he is. He is still the same person, who is making changes, and may have a different outlook.

What I don’t want, exactly, is the whole Lancel thing. Lancel sounds too brainwashed, like he is not even himself anymore. He sounds like a zombie now. Lancel is a mess. But he does get credit for standing up for his beliefs, and having the balls to not do as a Lannister is told, by other Lannisters.

Is the intermittent killing going to go on like when he was working for Cersei and Joff, or had to survive and didn’t care about anything on the road with a lack of purpose, and angry at everything and everyone.

No, not like before.

But this is Westeros. Armies and Houses are going to come to heads, and have been, and the Others are coming, and he may be in situations where it will be killed or be killed, or he has to defend someone, and he may have to fight. And he may have to kill, but it is not under the same circumstances.

And I pointed that out for a reason. I have seen people say he is coming out of this and will never fight or kill again. That is impossible. I think he will get pulled into events, or find out a certain bird, or people looking for her need help.

On two threads yesterday, a bunch of us took a very close look at Stranger and how he mirrors his owner. He doesn’t want to be on the QI. That’s for damn sure.

Sounds reasonable. I sure hope he continues having a rough tongue and be brutally honest, but even with those things preserved, I'm afraid he won't be as fascinating anymore, because he will be easier to get to the bottom of.

On the other hand it surely will be exciting to follow his journey from there. And I guess "killing" the Hound was a necessary move if Sandor was ever to save Sansa.

You know, one of my favourite parts of Sandor/the Hound was:

"if you can't protect yourself die and get out of the way of those who can"

<a few days later>

"Little biiiiird, I will protect you and kill everyone who tries to hurt you" (more or less ;))

aaah, those moments are specifically why I love him and for some bizarre reason I hope this side of him doesn't change...
