i think that this phrase has more importance then it would seem and when jon "dies" no doubt a few watchmen would of said it so this could mean is he's resurrected by mel he won't be bound by his vows anymore.

or you know it could just be a tradition that doesn't mean anything

also this is my first post so try not to hate to much

everyone is watching the show right now, and posting about it. be patient, you will get responses, and welcome to the forum! there are a lot of theories out there about jon's "death", resurrection, second life, whatever. one of them is that this phrase is what will release him from the night's watch so he can fight for winter, be lord of winterfell, sit on the iron throne, etc. i personally think that even though he will be relieved of his duty, he will choose to stay and fight the ww, or find out what they want, who they are, etc.

The only way I see him getting out of the NW is if there is no more need for the organization. Such as there being no more wall, which for the others to be an actual threat to the seven kingdoms there can't be an impassable barrier.

I begining to hope Jon is dead just to show people the world does not revolve around him......

We know the world doesn't revolve around him but so far no POV character has died in their own POV. Odds are he's not dead...yet.

I have to agree that most likely as long as there's a Night's Watch, he'll be in it. I can foresee the NW becoming obsolete and being disbanded though, and then he would be free. The only way I could see him not honoring the vows would be if he becomes the next Night's King.

yeah, I'm kinda split on the matter i never really liked jon as much as everyone else maybe in my top 20 characters but i don't really want to have to get used to another POV character at the wall sure theres mel but she's not really about the NW she just cares about stannis and stuff.

id be happy with benjen though

Jon is not bound by his oath.He is bound by his loyalty and his honor.Jon knows there is no one in the watch who can be the leader that is needed besides him they are all shortsighted fools.Jon will stay until he knows the wall/watch will survive without him.

Quentyn lived for three more weeks. Prologue characters are always killed in their prologues, part of the process. They aren't a part of the series POV's. The logical culprit would be Catelyn Stark, but her being LS I think is the loophole in that one.

OK but what if Jon dies and is not immediately resurrected?

He has a dream where he wakes and everything has changed. What if he wakes up and everyone is gone? Empty Wall or no Wall?

What if he wakes up and the watch has elected some dirt bag as the new LC?

I think he would feel his duty was to find out what happened at Winterfell in either of these two cases because he was on his way already... despite being LC.

If the wall is gone, I see the remaining NW to disband. His death in my eyes absolves him of the LC position. I can't see what the purpose of a Nights Watch would be once the wall is down, at that point it's the realms problem.
