Hightowers Versus Citadel

Question: What is the role of the Hightowers in the Song of Ice and Fire?

Theory: They are fighting the Citadel, somehow.

Support:

The Citadel's Maestor's are known for their anti-magic. There's some evidence they were responsible for the death of the dragons.

Archmaester Marwyn the Mage on the Citadel...

"Who do you think killed all the dragons the last time around? Gallant dragonslayers armed with swords? The world the citadel is building has no place in it for sorcery or prophecy or glass candles, much less for dragons. Ask yourself why Aemon Targaryen was allowed to waste his life upon the Wall, when by rights he should have been raised to archmaester. His blood was why. He could not be trusted. No more than I can."

On the other hand, we have this curious passage on the Hightowers:

EDIT: Chapter 45, AFFC:

"The Hightower must be doing something."

"To be sure. Lord Leyton's locked atop his tower with the Mad Maid, consulting books of spells. Might be he'll raise an army from the deeps. Or not."

AFFC Appendix on the Hightowers:

"... and it is said that certain of them have also dabbled in alchemy, necromancy, and other sorcerous arts."

Leyton Hightower is rumoured to be a worshiper of the Red God, which is all about magic.

You can't be practicing "alchemy, necromancy, and other sorcerous arts" and be anti-magic. Its an oxymoron.

It wouldn't surprise me if they hired Jaqen H'ghar, perhaps to work with their ally Marwyn (since that's where Sam finds him) and later Sam. If anyone could afford to hire the notoriously expensive Faceless Men, it would be the Hightowers.

Discuss! :)

Okay first, the hightowers are the guardians of the Citadel, that is one of their titles, second you are messing up Reach houses, it is the florents that are followers of Rh'llor not the Hightowers.

That was a product of common gossip and meant to be a jape.

AFFC Appendix on the Hightowers:

The Hightowers were instrumental in the founding of the Citadel and continue to protect it to this day. Subtle and sophisticated, they have always been great patrons of learning and the Faith, and it is said that certain of them have also dabbled in alchemy, necromancy, and other sorcerous arts.

Not seeing the evidence of them being Rh'llor worshippers, enemies of the The maesters, or sorcerers. They are loyal faith men and patrons of the Citadel.

That's what they said of Dany and her dragons in Westeros too... at first. Gossip often have basis in fact. Also, there also tends to be linkages between madness and sorcery in fantasy, and its interesting that Leyton Hightower's daughter is described as mad. Tenuous, perhaps. But interesting.

So Dany really murdered her brother with no cause ? I forgot when mad king or Joffrey had powers.

Of course not. But Dany did permit the death of her brother. Rumours have a BASIS of fact, not saying its all true. Joffrey was never mad. However the Targaryens in general are associated with madness AND magic.

The sorcerer part was probably not true, they are champions of the faith and Citadel the rumor of being wizards does not add up.

Name one Targ that had magical powers and was mad.

Since Jaqen is working against the anti-magic Maesters, I always assumed whoever contracted him was pro-dragon.

Maybe Varys or Illyrio or Euron. Possibly Littlefinger.

Although it could also mean he's just stealing secrets from the Maesters and has nothing to do with dragons.

I was thinking the IB hired Jaqen to infiltrate the citadel for "dragon slaying" info. This seems plausible to me considering Braavos history with valyrians but, idk. A hole in that theory is that Dany is liberating slaves so they might actually wanna side with her

Yes, it's theorized that the FM are working for the IB as part of some giant contract.
