Blindside quoting

I know that this can be interpreted as moderation question and that in that case I should PM a moderating team, but I think this is nothing personal and I just want to know where we stand for when this is in question.

It became my attention that lately some posters don't use quote button, but actually copy the content of the post and respond to it. The person who was quoted thus either receive no notification, or miss the fact he/she was quoted. I don't know what is behind this practice, given that board does give us opportunity for multiquoting, editing the quoted post etc. The only solution I can think of is indeed that some people do that unintentionally, while others do that to evade a discussion with person they quoted. For, as I have noticed there are posters who do this all the time while debating with someone.

My question would be where exactly do we stand with this? I mean, this certainly isn't some great rule-breaking, but is indeed a nasty, passive-aggressive practice that serves no one. Is it a grey area or completely acceptable?

Once again, apologies if I have brought this question where I shouldn't have.

I access the forums almost exclusively with my phone. Although there are quote and multi quote options, it can be really cumbersome to use those functions (and even then, they don't always work). I can understand why people who aren't as patient or aren't as tech savvy would just cooy/paste instead. I have the most trouble on slower networks... I must have some settings that simplify the apps functions when there's a slower connection.

I haven't been able to multi quote on my phone so in that case I usually copy & paste. I don't get a notification if someone quotes me anyway. Is there some setting to do that?

My Settings --- Notification options --- And just click on the things you want to be notified about.

I've seen people state on occasion that they have difficulty quoting properly on mobile devices, so that may account for some of what you describe.

I imagine there is part of that too... I was just wondering whether there is more to that than just easiness in posting. For I have indeed noticed some blindside type of responses...

Every since the password glitch a few months back I can't quote at all. Can barely even make a post, not sure what all happened but I lost my user name at the same time. In order to post anything I have to click a little arrow on right side of reply box, then click a square on upper left side of reply box. When I do this I can post but have no other options.

there's nothing particularly blindsidey about directly quoting something via copy & paste, which is of course not a recent phenomenon but is rather the manner in which quotation has proceeded for thousands of years; it is more aggressive-aggressive than passive-aggressive; it serves those who are not indolent; it arises out of the early days of the internet when there was no quotation function; it's not a matter of evading any particular person's ability to respond or subverting their notification settings but on the contrary assumes that interlocutors are adults with some attention to detail who monitor their own colloquies and can recall multiple conversations simultaneously; it is accordingly unambiguously ungrey.

OK, thank you sologdin... As I said, I could be wrong though. I have no previous experience with the forums and boards, so I am not someone who knows "dos and don'ts" of some policies. This is something I have noticed people do, and the fact that some a good portion of those posts contained insults on the account of person that is quoted, especially on threads that are difficult to follow like those on TV subforums or some fast-growing threads on General, it wasn't out of mind to assume that there is something shady behind that.

I'm having problems with the quote funcion, if I use "quote" I can't write OUTSIDE the quote frame unless I switch to the BB Code mode.

I occasionally have the opposite issue -- if I quote a post I have to turn BBCode Mode off or else when I submit my post it eats everything but the quote, making it look as if my post was entirely made out of the quote and nothing else. (I also had the, "can't type outside fhe quote frame" thing too but I had to switch BBCode Mode off.

I sometimes 'blindside quote' if I am quoting multiple people in one post (I quote the first person normally then cut and paste the other ones).

OK ,I'm a complete klutz with quoting, and when something goes wrong like can't type outside the box.. I've no idea what to do. I've also had the problem that if I quote and then cut a lot out, I wind up with a big empty box around the quote ?!? ( and I still don't think I understand multi-quote )..so I just got into cutting and pasting. I have limited time to spend and usually don't want to spend it playing around.. ( I have to blush at being so tech challenged )

But I just assumed that people checked to see if there's any responses in the threads they've been following, it never occurred to me that people might think I was sneaking something by on them. I don't mind if they think I'm dumb with a computer ( I am ), but wouldn't want to be thought to be being agressive in any way. :blushing:

Actually ,I just came here to see if this still worked..

That's how I do it, I haven't ever got used to the way quote features work nowadays, this is the only forum I've been on since forever and there never was a "button" before:) I always c&p'd

Considering also there are entire threads dedicated to spamming folks for fun and being blatantly passive aggresive, I find it odd anyone would moan about being "bindsided". I sure hope I haven't "Blindsided" someone. Never even thought about it I figured people read most of the thread they are spam... I mean folllowing.

I never quote anyone without at least bolding their name...that's not against the rules is it??

I'd rather be aggressive-aggressive but that would only get me in trouble (reported!) by a passive- agressive spam brat....so

(Oh no have I said too much?)

Is it a matter of this { , this [, or this( ..? or Caps or not , if I'd like a tidy box around what I've cut and pasted ?

Well since you asked, I've actually found that quoting is much easier in a tablet, as you can see that quoting works just like spoiler tags, i.e. [quote]quote here[/quote].

If you want to name a quote, you can by adding "name="name here"", i.e. [quote name="bemused]quote here[/quote].

If you're adventurous, you can add a link to the post you're quoting and you can also say when it was said, but the former sounds exhausting beyond words and I have no idea how the latter works. This is all possible on my iPad, but I've had trouble with my laptop before so that might be why you're finding it difficult.

But can you quote within quotes?
