Characters Outside of ASOIAF that you despise any genre

Dolores Umbridge - (she is epitome of why some people should never have power over anyone else, one of the few Characters I wanted to go through my my books and tear apart)

O'Brien (1984) - a cunning person you'd never want to be on the other side of the door at Room 101

Nurse Rachett - One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

Tris Prior - (sorry if she is anyone's hero here I couldn't stand her, she never grew or learned much of anything)

Any Charcter in a Jodi Picoult novel --- all I know thank God not all teenagers are like the ones she writes about... I gave up after the Tenth Circle.

What are yours?

About 90% of the characters in Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time.

Men are just too stupid and childish; women obnoxious and even more immature. Not to mention that Jordan created so many of them, that they start to feel as the same character after a while. And don't even get me started on the "villains", the Forsaken. A sorry lot of inept, inefficient baddies, if there ever was one.

Ha, I was going to post a "in before someone brings up all of Wheel Of Time" post, but someone beat me to it.

Are we talking about characters we are supposed to hate or just any in general?

Also I think you won the thread with Dolores Umbridge. I knew someone who would constantly scream and throw the fifth book across the room when they were first reading it she bothered them so much.

Dolores Umbridge is a work of genius.

She is also what working-class British people should point at when foreigners react with befuddlement to their hatred of Margaret Thatcher.

Anyway, for characters we're supposed to hate: Olar Ethil and The Errant from Malazan are high up on the list. Evil geniuses at fucking up people I like.

And for people we're not: Tavi from Codex Alera. Might be the worst Mary-Sue I've ever encountered, especially in what would otherwise have been a solid work of fiction. Just dreadful.

"What makes Iago evil? Some people ask. I never ask.” - Joan Didion, Play It as It Lays

Yeah, I can't stand Joan Didion either.

She's not really a "character", though.

edit: I don't really despise Holden Caulfield, but I certainly felt the urge to shake him strongly.

Truly despise Jane Eyre. Okonkwo. Romeo, but not Juliet. Everyone in the last act of Merchant of Venice except Shylock. Most of the population of Austenian and Dickensian England.

Thank you I've always wondered why people hate that Woman so much :)

My support for Lady Thatcher are rather past thing, but even so I cannot really see this similarity between her and Dolly U.

Like, really.

Also: if we are in HP areas I would add Severus Snape.

In the Malazan world, I hate Korbolo Dom and Mallick Rel, I don't know which one is worse. Also most of the Letherii politicians, there were some really disgusting people in that court.

I also hate Kvothe, I can't stand him, I hated Name of the Wind because of him.

First Law's Bayaz. But he's cool sometimes.

You hate Snape?

Definitely. Maybe even more than Umbridge because he feels real, and Dolores was always kinda caricature of human being (probably the most dehumanized character of all series).

Also: Sierin Vayu from The Wheel of Time. She's like Stannis without any of his redemption qualities ;)

The North Remembers...

Anyway. From Robin Hobb - Regal Farseer, who was just so selfish, power hungry and petty. Kyle Haven :ack: And Kennit. Just, no :ack:

There are a lot of crime-fiction novels I have read where I find myself hating the detective. There is also one where I hate the victim, whose name iirc is Andreas or something, from.a book called "When the Devil Holds the Candle." Even after reading all of his backstory, i found little sympathy for his treatment of people
