Vikings #4, On to Season 3

I gotta be honest... I really really like Vikings.... I also liked Rome.... but I don't see either as being anywhere near the quality of Game of Thrones.... and to be even more honest... I don't get the board-wide infatuation with Rome at all... it was good, but not great.

Your opinion is wrong, and you should feel ashamed.

Put me in the "infatuated with Rome" camp, but I am a sucker for historical dramas and historical fiction. For me, top three would be Rome, first two seasons of Deadwood, and The Wire (in that order).

Me too. I tend to lose my objectivity a bit because I favor the historical stuff. My list was really more about current shows still on tv.

We all know the past greats and those lists only change around because of personal preference.

What it comes down to is Vikings makes me happy to watch.

Is it possible for Vikings to reach GoT's popularity/ratings/status?

Not when you don't have characters like Arya and "Khaleesi". Even though Vikings has excellent characters, they are not as varied in looks, purpose, and personality as the GoT characters are. Also, Vikings has done a fair job at getting rid of the "bad guys" in a timely fashion, so at any one time there are few characters viewers love to hate.

I doubt it will ever be as popular. I mean Vikings has definitely became fairly popular but GoT is a phenomenon. And unfortunately, a show like Vikings seems destined to live in the shadow of GoT.

In terms of pure quality though I'd say its already currently better than GoT. Will it ever be as good as Season 1 of GoT? We'll see. It's definitely improving so I would't count it out. Of course there will always be people who write it off as a second tier GoT ripoff, but at this point I enjoy it a lot more than I enjoy GoT personally. Of course though, this is where it gets more subjective.

:agree:

Vikings is hurt by a lack of tits, a later start than Got and the fact that it is on the history channel. The network that brought us such magnificent classics as Pawn Shop and Duck Dynasty. I think we all frowned the first time we heard they were making a series about Vikings. Especially with Michael Hirst involved, who brought us such turds as the Tudors and Camelot.

I've been on YouTube the past hour watching random clips from the show and my goodness I forgot how awesome this show is. Anyone know the name of the track that plays during the battle in Season 2 episode 9?

If you can point me to the particular clip, since I don't feel like watching the whole episode now, maybe I can help you out.

If I had a heart by fever ray. Not sure, though. Check wikipedia.

That's the intro song.

No, thanks to tumblr, art work, nerds and celebs, etc, that show has spreaded faster then wildfire, but vikings as amazing as it is, lacks the flare, porn, hipster pull that brings in legions of people to it.

As to quality, I can say I like it more, it lacks what shows like Marco and Games can't seem to help using: the ability to use nudity. Seriously, it gives it two more points because now I don't need to spend a third of the screen time seeing the vikings doing it. It also helps that it pulls from a time of true mystery, so it has liberties when it comes to accuracy. I hope it inspires more pieces(good ones) of the lost age, I would like to see the rise of Charles Martel, the Muslim invasion, and the beginning of the reconquest of Spain.

I don't have the clip right now, but it's the battle where Rollo gets stomped on by the horse and Bjorn goes ham. He even drop kicks someone lol.

The European versions have a bit more nudity but it seems much more natural. In other words when you see it you aren't thinking, "Omg, they're showing boobs just to show boobs! "

Apparently I am conflicted, I read this post and thought:

The nudity in Marco Polo is totally gratuitous and a little distracting. It is so in your face you start to forget there are like 10 naked women on the screen at once.

Then I read this and thought: I would totally like to see some of the Vikings women naked (if that is what you are saying, there is nudity on Euro Vikings).

I am a pig.
