Archmaester Marwyn's motivation

First post, though I've been reading on the forums for some time.

After finishing AFFC, a couple questions comes to mind, and I would just be curious as to if someone in here shares the same curiosity.

I don't know whether this has been discussed here before, though.

In the final Sam chapter, Archmaester Marwyn is off to seek out Dany, after delivering the whole speech about The Citadel being previously responsible for extinguishing all dragons in the world. What is his motivation for seeking out Dany this time? To end the lives of her dragons, as they once did?

And why is he so against involving other Archmaesters? Were there only a few of the order who went rogue in killing the dragons the last time around, and therefore - going against the general interest of the Citadel?

After reading this, I just realised how little I actually know about the Citadel, and their role in developing this world. They might have some hidden agenda that hasn't quite surfaced yet. I have registered that there does exist some conspiracy theories regarding the order.

Well, anyways, don't know if anyone will respond to this inconclusive brainstorming, however - felt like putting it out there.

I think it's the other way round. Archmaester Marwyn is somehow different than the other Archmaesters, and I think he disagrees with the others, but has the sense not to air his views out loud, like Maester Aemon might have done (or maybe he was sent to the wall precisely because of his family name and was not even given a chance to prove that he could be trusted to keep his vows if he knew what was goong on). The other Archmaesters and acolytes think him 'weird' and know he goes about studying non conformist things, it they don't suspect him of any pro-dragon/Targ initiatives, so to speak.

Remember there is Alleras (probably Sarella, one of the Sand snakes) with him, and Pate, that guy who was killed by probably Jaqen H'Ahar in the prologue. They might be 'in' with the Archmaester. If Alleras is really Sarella in hiding, I doubt a Sand Snake would oppose the return of the Targs especially if they have dragons.

Just my two cents.

I think we share some of this view, I don't feel like any of it is oposite. Archmaester Marwyn seems like he deliberately distances himself from the other of the order.

My curiosity builds more on what exactly his motivation for seeking out Dany alone is. Is he once more trying to rid the world of dragons, or does he eye something else?

The way I see understood it was that Archmaester Marwyn is one of the few leaders left in the Citadel that wants to see magic and dragons to return to the world. The rest of the Citadel seems to have caused the extinction of the dragons the first time around, because they want to create a world more akin to the real one (like the world that we live in).

I think that the Marwyn was heavily hinting that the Maesters have a really heavy hand in how the history of Westeros has developed. It seemed to me like they are some kind of illumanati/freemason conspiracy that's trying to control the world. I'd like to see how much GRRM reveals about the Citadel in later books..

Just a thought, could there be correlation between the 'emphasis on the Westrosi religion struggle' and the rise of these 'righteous archmaesters in citadel'? And Marwyn just wants to keep the old ways. The same as the Starks keep their old gods. Hence why he's after Dany. Hope this makes sense.

How about something as simple as this Dany doesn't have a Maester to advise her...the Citadel likes to keep track of all movers and shakers that have anything to do with Westeros...Marwyn takes it upon himself to be that Maester...and what better Maester could be sent than Marwyn what with all his travels, his esoterics and of course the familarity with Blood Magic, dragons and obsidian....

What is going to be interesting is whether Dany accepts him given her dealings with MMD and the fact if I remember correctly MMD mentioned the name Marwyn to Dany....
