Daario - the opposite of fake

Dany's infatuation with Daario is almost universally hated, but, if you think about it, isn't it a very realistic infatuation? Like, Daario is nothing if not unapologetic. He's the very opposite of fake. He never pretends to be something he isn't, or feel something he doesn't, or think something he never would. And I wouldn't say he's cocky. Self-confident? Yes, he definitely is. But not cocky. His love for himself is deep enough that he doesn't have to be cocky. He enjoys himself and doesn't try to hide it, but he doesn't force that feeling on anyone.

Women are rarely immune to that kind of men, which is why Dany's and Daario's romance is something I find very believable. Also, I don't think GRRM created Daario as some sort of a bad news for Dany, let alone a disaster Dany's rushing into willingly or not. He doesn't hide any side of himself from her, and she sees him for what he truly is. And they're mutually attracted to each other. Whatever comes out of that, it's a pretty good starting point for any relationship. This is ASOIAF after all, so any kind of bad luck may strike Dany and Daario at any given moment, but so far I see nothing wrong there.

Even his flamboyance, which many readers seem to hate, actually does fit into the colorful culture of Esoss (which, in turn, is modeled after very similar historical examples), and, even more, emphasizes Daario's basic characteristic: he's so genuine and authentic, he really can't be confused for anyone else.

But towards the end of ADWD i feel Daario may genuinely care for her

He surely put his life in her hands by becoming a hostage. But, not even that seems enough to convince Barristan. It looks like good old Selmy, himself never nearly as free as Daario is, really can't stand when someone is so authentic. Not that I blame Barristan, of course, because he takes great pride in following the rules, so he can't help but see Daario as a bad news for Dany.

I actually do like certain aspects of this romance. What it means for Dany. I don't find any of Daario's character traits to be all that great but nor do I find them annoying to the point of hatred.

Let me tell you, if I had those daggers around my hips, I'd also play with them all the time, and I'd fully expect girls to take a notice of that, and to react accordingly.

I agree with you in that Daario actually is believable as Dany's love interest. Dany loved Drogo and in some ways Daario reminds her of Drogo.

He's even more unrestricted than Drogo. Like, Drogo's doom was that he dared to do something no Dothraki ever did before - crossing the Narrow Sea. More precise, Drogo couldn't have it both ways: to remain a Dothraki (plundering the Lamb People) and to simultaneously become something else (sea traveler). Daario can. He's bound by nothing. Just like Dany practically is. She too can do whatever the hell she wants: stay in Meereen, invade Westeros, go some third place... Not counting her encounter with a Dothraki horde at the end of ADWD, of course.

Yeah. I dont really get all the Daario hate either. I don't like Dany at all, but Daario is the least of her problems. If it was Jon seeing Ygritte while he was LC, people wouldn't be half as judgemental.

But how dare Dany enjoy sex with the bad boy... she has to stick with the creepy bear man.

For all I care Dany could keep fucking Daario for the entire rest of the series if she married Quentyn. The dornish wouldn't even care.

I agree, I don't really find anything irritating about Dany-Daario. I've seen people make out as though she is a slattern and infidel for sleeping with him, but both of them.know what their relationship is, and Dany ends it before she is married. I do think Daario grew to care for her more than he ever anticipated by the end though.

I admit he has some undesirable traits though

I think the whole thing suffers because Dany was a bit stationary and not much was happening while she was romancing Daario. When the fans simply wanted her to finally move towards Westeros, she was there, being a "normal" teenager (who also happens to be a queen :P )

imo, Daario never turned his cloak and never broke contract with Yunkai. (he is, imo, the true betrayal for gold; not Jorah)

He'll betray Dany I think; and is not actually a hostage at all. He's done nothing else but undermine her from the moment they met. He's made brutal, violent suggestions to deal with her enemies, offered up a cruel, treacherous plan to deal with the nobles of Meereen (slaughter them during her wedding to Hizdahr in a RW v.2.). He has discredited her by bragging about bedding her and kissing her in public....

iirc, GRRM said there is more to Daario than appears?

EDIT: from the Citadel:

The treason for gold is variously believed to either have been already been fulfilled by Jorah by his sale of information concerning Daenerys to Varys or will be fulfilled by a betrayal from Illyrio Mopatis or the sellsword Daario Naharis. We favor the latter idea, and in particular believe that Daario is the likeliest suspect.

If that turns out to be true, I'd be very disappointed in GRRM. Like, why didn't Daario just kill Dany when he had the chance? Sorry, but no, your theory doesn't look convincing to me.

I'm not the only one to believe that Daario will betray her (see above, the quote from the Citadel). The how is the question; maybe he started out genuine enough. But he is a sellsword and he killed his fellow captains, too. He has the profile.

And he has undermined Dany, purposely or not.

Well now he has motive to betray more than before. She sent him as a hostage, I'm sure he's pissed about that
