Crackpotish: Lyanna and Rheagar had a bromance not a romance

In the books many characters reference Lyanna's "kidnapping" or Lyanna "running away with Rhaegar".

I believe there is a good chance BOTH ARE WRONG.

Here is what I believe happened:

Rheagar crowns Lyanna Queen of Love and Beauty cuz he knows she is the knight of the Laughing tree. He crowns her to recognize the love she had for her bannerman. Robert Baratheon gets mad. Rheagar is hitting on his girl! He does somethign rash and foolish that scares her off. Lyanna runs away from Robert. Rheagar runs after her thinking someone is after her because they found out about the whole laughing tree thing. He is concerned for her safety so he immediately rides after her. Robert does not want to blame himself for Lyanna's running away so he blames Rheagar. He disappeared right when Lyanna did and was flirting with her afterall. He starts the rumor that Rheagar kidnapped Lyanna. No one is willing to do anything about it while the king and his men are around. Lyanna evades Rheagar and ends up on the isle of faces. Rheagar finally catches up to Lyanna and tells her to go home. Lyanna does not want to go. They stay on the isle of Faces for awhile.

Meanwhile... Brandon heres from X who heard from Y who heard from Z who heard from Robert that Rheager has raped and kidnapped Lyanna. Brandon belives this and gets very angry. He rushes to Kings Landing to confront Rheagar who is not even home. He is arrested by the king for shouting treason and for acting insanely. Lord Rickard hears of his son's capture and goes to KL to find out what the heck is going on. He demands his son is set free but the King refuses. Rickard demands trial by combat and then is roasted alive.

Rheagar finally persuades Lyanna to leave the isle of the Faces and finds that war has broken out. Lyanna is taken as a hostage and Robert's Rebellion happens. Lyanna is moved to the TOJ when fighting gets really close to KL. Rheagar assumes that his wife and children are going to the TOJ with Lyanna so the Kings Guard goes there to protect Elia, Ageon and Rheanys. They travel there AFTER KL is sacked cuz they assume that Elia and her children were headed to Dorne because there is no reason for them to have remained in KL. They find only Lyanna in the Tower of Joy. Lyanna is sick and is dieing.

Ned gets to the tower and Lyanna is almost dead. He holds her hand and asks Ned to promise her to lay her in Winterfell and to not blame anyone but herself for the war. He cries.

Bam!

Support:

a: Robert is a hot head. IMO he would be offended by R giving L the rose crown. He mourns Lyanna for years and insists on seeing her tomb. He romanticizes his relationship with her (perhaps to hide what really happened)

b: Lyanna was not the type of girl to be swept off her feet by prince charming. She was like Arya and I could not see Arya running off with prince Rheagar just cuz she liked his harp. She is independent.

c: Ned does not think of Rheagar as a bad person. If he eloped with his sister I think he would not respect Rheagar cuz R abandoned Elia. If R had no romantic attachment to L I think he would respect him. If him "kidnapping" L was him protecting her, he would have the respect Ned gives him.

d. Kidnapping L goes against everything we know about R. People remember him as a great leader and a great potential king. Him kidnapping L seems Rash and out of character.

Thoughts?

Well, we don't know where Lyanna was during the "kidnapping", but she wasn't with Robert, because he was in the Eyrie. So it doesn't seem like he was the cause for her running away.

It also doesn't seem to work out timeline wise for Robert to have been the first to hear about such things, and to make up stories who get to Brandon through several "in between" people.

Also, Oswell Whent and Arthur Dayne accompanied Rhaegar when he disappeared, before Lyanna disappeared as well. They were with Rhaegar the entire time.

And it would have been Rhaegar or Aerys to make arrangements for Elia, Aegon and Rhaenys. Aerys had made it pretty clear that they weren´t going anywhere, so why would Rhaegar assume his wife and children were going to ToJ? And why would he place the hostage so far away from KL, the place where, in the function of hostage, she could have saved Aerys' life (as in, "if you enter my castle, I'll kill her"). Above all, it would involve Rhaegar having to drag Lyanna through three kingdoms, two of whom were experiencing multiple fights (Stormlands and Riverlands).

Ned isn't showing Rhaegar any respect necessarily, he just remains very neutral about Rhaegar.

I really like this theory, how it really fits the characters we know and makes them more interesting at the same time. But there are major flaws in it.

What reason would Rhaegar have to move her from the IoF to ToJ? If he was concerned about her safety, he could have just given her an escort back to WF instead of.... taking her to a tower far far away where she would DIE OF DISEASE.

If he wanted her as hostage, why not make it known and begin negotiations, naming conditions for her release.... Yes, he would effectively overrule his father, but would he really care at this point, considering that Aerys caused the bloody mess to begin with?
On the other hand, them being madly in love and not fully anticipating the actions of their relatives, while a bit hard to believe, neatly explains everything.

What if she slept with Sir Arthur Dayne?

New theory:

A+L=J

explains why Ned returned Dawn and why he would not let Ned into the ToJ (wanted to keep his son safe)

And they were married, therefore Jon is Jon Dayne, the Sword of the Morning, rightful wielder of Dawn (which is Lightbringer) and savior of Westeros.

I think he'd have a different name though. How about Rhaegar Dayne? After all if it weren't for the prince Arthur and Lyanna never would have gotten together.
