Werewolves in Westeros?

Ok so,

When Robb Stark still had a head Cersei and Tywin spent a bit of time throwing around rumours that he and the other north men were werewolves.

Obviously they weren't but people still knew what a werewolf was so does that mean that they once existed or still do exist in the world?

Could they be a legend which turns out to be true like the giants on the other side of the wall?

I would love to hear some theories in this...

Mormonts are rumored to be able to turn into bears too.

I say Werewolves are as real as Snarks and Grumkins, that is they may or may not be and we'll never know one way or another.

This being said, your question "people still knew what a werewolf was so does that mean that they once existed or still do exist in the world?" is rather daft: here, in our own world, we know what a unicorn, a werewolf, a vampire, a zombie, or a dragon is even when they never existed at all, and I don't see why it would be different for a secondary world that has old women telling scary fantasy stories to children.

What the hell even is a Snark or Grumpkin???

But in their world those things do exist such as Dragons, Unicorns, Giants, etc...
People there dismissed those as silly fantasies but they turned out to be true, so couldn't Werewolves come from a similar origin?

Mythical creatures on par with a werewolf or a vampire in the westerosi culture. You have not read the books, have you? Those are probably not mentioned in the show.

But in their world those things do exist such as Dragons, Unicorns, Giants, etc...

In our world exist such things as elephants, crocodiles, tigers, and most middle ages people would never have seen one... that does not make werewolves real in our world. Similarly, that one mythical creature of our world exists in Westeros does not make all mythical creatures real in Westeros. Werewolves could be real, and they could as well not be, but the existence of a giant is no proof one way or another.

I've read the damn books, I even got one signed by GRRM!
What I meant was that beyond their name not is really known about them.
They are also in the show, I can name at least 2 instances where they are mentioned, when Tyrion is talking to Jon about Joining the Nights watch in Season 1 Episode 2, and the other time is in Season 2 in a small council meeting where Cersei laughs at Mormonts pleads for help and Tyrion defends them.

Snarks can apparently be used to "magic up" your sword. Make of it what you will.

We have no knowledge either way of the existance, past or present, of werewolves in Westeros. What we do have is that there are legends of them. Personally I think it's most likely tales of wargs and their wolves that grew in the telling, as folk tales have a tendency to do. But given the other fantastical elements that turn out to be true, who can say for sure? (well GRRM can).

I completely agree with you there mate :)

I think it would be cool if someone turned out to be an actual werewolf but I doubt it...

Were-Creatures are a totally different species than a Warg which is what Jon and the rest of the Stark Children are believed to be its a different ability you are born with you cannot be born a Were-wolf.. Their minds go into an animals body their very skin does not change as it would with Were Creatures such as Wolves, Cats, etc. its not the same its a different sort of a fantasy world.

You are actually throwing out some stuff from my old haunt World of Darkness role playing games that had all those sort of creatures; Were-Wolves, Cats (Leopards, Jaguars, etc.) Vampires etc...

My take is that werewolves do not exist. Here in RL we have legends of people with the ability to transform into various kinds of animals. The werewolf is probably the most well known example of this. In Westeros there are skinchangers, which sounds like the same thing, but skinchangers don't actually transform into other species of animals. Skinchangers have the ability to take control of the mind of an animal that they have bonded with, but they don't actually physically transform.

Wargs are the closest thing to werewolves in that they inhabit the minds of wolves or dire wolves. But still, they don't transform into wolves.

I'll expand on my statement earlier by saying people from the south seem to thing wargs creat other wargs by biteing them and as I said the stark kids wear the skin if wolves at night which is what a werewolf does so I think their GRRM take on werewolves

Makes sense.

Is there any textual references to prove that this is what southerners think though?

I don't have the books handy 'cos I'm in my commerce class at school :P

Starks 'become' their Dire Wolves, wouldn't that be a were wolf?

Werewolves are people who physically transform into wolves. Wargs occupy the bodies of wolves/direwolves that they have bonded with, but the wolf and the human both continue to exist and the merging is temporary.
