Bloody hell, England are going to lose to Sri Lanka after another collapse. I didn't even bother watching any of it after seeing Sri Lanka were racking up the runs because I just assumed it was nailed on to be a draw.

Looking at his form I think at this point you do have to say Cook's place should probably be in question.

Who's going to bet against him breaking that record? I suppose it will depend on when he next gets a test innings.

Sri Lanka's next Test is against SA. Due to my bias, I hope he doesn't get the record.

Batting collapse from England. Wonderful spell of bowling by Prasad.

That was hopeless from England, as a day's play it was almost as bad as some of the moments in the last Ashes. Despite that it was a magnificent innings from Angelo Mathews, maybe Sri Lanka don't need to be quite as worried about the imminent retirement of Jayawardene and Sangakarra if he's going to continue in the form he's been in recently.

I think we'd have to question his captaincy as well at this point. He did seem short of ideas (not helped by the selectors not giving him a proper spinner for a bit of bowling variety) and he's not exactly leading by example with the bat. Of course, there's still the question of who would be the replacement captain, although with Prior's form improved since the Ashes he might be a good option.

They can't afford to drop Cook. England's batting stocks are pretty slim. They could eat humble pie and beg KP to come back, but that would still mean playing Root out of position as an opener. Their other options (both of which would require Root to open) would be Butler and Taylor (perhaps?). My feeling is that Cook is too good to average 20 for the rest of his career. He will regain form. Unfortunately, the biggest obstacles for him are the weight of expectation and the responsibilities of captaincy, a task to which he is not naturally suited to. If it was upto me, I'd rid him of the latter. As for the former, he'll just have to learn to deal with it like his contemporaries.

Haven't really been following this series that much (due to World Cup and Wimbledon having started...it's sporting heaven with the Tour to be added in later), but on the Cook situation I think England have to stick with him a little longer. The only batsman who is established enough to be a captain is Bell and I've never really heard him in consideration for it so I assume he doesn't want it or the powers that be don't see leadership qualities in him. You could try giving it to Broad I suppose.

More the issue is England's lack of established batsmen, which has been an ongoing problem.

I feel sad for Ali.

It was a magnificent effort from him. I thought he had some unwise shot selection in his earlier innings in the series and then he turns it round by batting for the entire fifth day (minus one ball). There can't be many better debut Test centuries. I still don't think he's good enough to be the sole spinner, but I think he's definitely justified his place as a batsman with that performance.

It's a pity there isn't another Test after the first two both came down to the final over, but I think Sri Lanka do deserve their first series victory in England.

  • 2 weeks later...

Stuff happening in cricket such as mat fixing and NZ winning an away series without a murmur!

There was a time when NZ beating the Windies in the Caribbean would have been a major story, but it's a sad reflection of the Windies declines that it's not a shock. Still a good result for the Kiwis, though.

The England squad for the first India Test has been announced, the only change being the addition of Ben Stokes. I'm guessing he'll probably replace Chris Jordan, who has done OK but hadn't impressed as much as Stokes did in the Ashes. This does mean England still don't have a specialist spinner, at some point they're going to need to do something about that. I'm not sure what to expect from the Test series, the England team are still trying to recover from their traumatic winter and have plenty of inexperience while the Indians are similarly inexperienced and don't have a great touring record. I'm hoping the Indians are more committed than they were on their last tour here when they seemed a bit unmotivated and the much-hyped series between the two teams who were meant to be the best in the world at the time ended up being a simple victory for England.

England could not be playing a better opponent than India right now. India have a long record of playing out of form batsmen into form. They also give inexperienced opposition batsmen ample time in the middle to get used to test cricket. However, Anderson and Broad have struggled recently. The Indian batsmen, apart from being young and enormously talented, have demonstrated a keen hunger for runs. I wouldn't be surprised if this is a series of high scoring draws with the occasional batting collapse or brilliant spell of bowling being decisive.

The Pieterson situation amuses me more and more. From his side we have silence, nothing sticking to the agreement made with the termination of his contract. Then we have members of the ECB seemingly forgetting this with comments and now Strauss being a bit of an idiot.
