Characters that will possibly be cut

This is a thread for characters that might be cut in the show.

I think that S5 will omit some important characters such as:

Jon Connington - There has to be a reason why Varys is sailing with Tyrion across the narrow sea. At first I suspected that after arriving in Pentos, Varys would stay there and let Tyrion leave, but I have the suspicion that he will be the one that introduces Aegon VI to us. Also, Jon Connington has never been mentioned in the show at all. When Tyrion realizes who Griff and Young Griff are, we know that Jon Connington was a close friend of Rhaegar Targaryen, and that after Robert ascended the throne, he fled across the narrow sea. Unless they make reference to him early in the season, I believe we won't see the Lord of Griffin's Roost on screen.

Arianne Martell - This one is not as likely to be dismissed, but due to the recent casting call and audition tape leak of Obara Sand, there is a lot of suspicion that Arianne will be cut from the show, and that she will be replaced by the Sand Snakes. I wouldn't want to see that myself. Arianne is an important character in the books, and I think omitting her would be like omitting Sam or Davos. There is a reason why she is the one that wants to crown Myrcella. Plus, she is the heir to Sunspear, and it would be utterly idiotic if you ask me, to actually legitimize the SS as heirs to Dorne. Plus, Arianne's sample chapter in TWoW indicates that she will interact and perhaps marry Aegon VI, which gives her an even bigger role. Although, given the fact that Trystane will be aged up for the show, it gives more of a reason for Arianne to be cut.

Bowen Marsh and Othell Yarwyck - This derives from the fact that both these characters have appeared in the show in minor roles... and have been played by the same actor, Brian Fortune as Marsh in S1 and as Yarwyck in S4. Othell Yarwyck did initially appear in S1 played Dennis McKeever, but it's unknown that he was actually playing that character. Perhaps they are merging the two together, but since we still have Alliser Thorne and Janos Slynt at the Wall, I'm thinking that they will be replacing them, with Slynt dying early on obviously.

Arys Oakheart - This one I'm sure will be cut, and replaced by Bronn. The leaked audition indicated that Bronn is in Dorne, so we won't be seeing Ser Arys I believe. That probably explains why Jaime is sent to Dorne, as I believe Cersei will send Bronn to bring Myrcella to KL, but he will get killed by Areo Hotah, and out of desperation, Cersei will send Jaime to bring her back.

Taena Merryweather - Lady Taena is Cersei's source of information about Margaery in AFfC. Since they introduced the handmaiden that spied on Shae and heard her arguing with Tyrion in the first episode of S4, it's very likely that she will replace Taena. So, no Myrish Swamp to look forward to... :crying:

I think Jon Con will be in. The lack of mentions about him doesn't really mean anything because let's be honest, did anyone actually pay any attention to like the two mentions of him in AFFC? He just needs a couple lines of explanation. Plus Varys and Joncon are doing different stuff, so while I think Varys will accompany Tyrion on his travels (taking on some of Haldon Halfmaester's role) he'll ultimately end up where he is in the books.

You see, what I think will happen is that Varys will accompany Tyrion on the Shy Maid (and introduce Aegon), and when Tyrion gets abducted by Jorah, Varys leads Aegon to the camp of the Golden Company, who will invade the Stormlands with him, and then leaves him and takes off to KL where he murders Kevan. In addition, D&D have said that we'll learn much more about Varys in the show. Though I do agree that even prior to his appearance in ADwD, JonCon wasn't that familliar, but D&D have already altered major storyline aspects in order to not confuse Unsullied viewers (e.g. Tysha). Who knows though. We can only wait to see.

Varys will take Illyrio's role, I think. If we consider that to discuss future plots, might indicate that Aegon isn't related to Illyrio at all or if he actually is, Illyrio is nothing Blackfyre but some random guy who was lucky to have a valyrian looking son. Or Illyrio is simply varys' friend and Aegon is related to the eunuch.

Either way, someone has to be in charge of Aegon and "train" him as a King, warrior, etc. He might not being given his whole group (lemore, haldon, etc), but at least someone is needed and a former Lord is quite capable. Varys can't fit that role because he has been all these years working at KL and Illyrio has already being showed as working with Dany and Viserys. (The show won't complicate the whole thing as the books do)

Agree with you but Con's story has been mentioned in AFFC and Storm as well.

In the show, there has been no need for him to be mentioned yet: Arya hasn't been told about the Battle of the Bells. But, considering season 5 is both book 4 and 5, we might get to meet Connington later, in ep. 3 or 4 and we meet Red Ronnet first or Cersei mentions him while discussing Hands.

I'd consider this faulty logic; she gets cut simply because some random unnamed extra with no connection to Margaery appeared? I wouldn't be surprised if said extra never appears again on the show. My guess would be the character remains; Cersei will need someone to interact with to talk about her plans to. Since they can't simply show her inner monologue they need someone for her to say such things to. Its not going to be Tommen, Margaery or Master Pycelle. I could see Qyburn. If Taena gets cut I'd bet it on being due to that rather than the appearance of an extra we'll likely never see again.

Either way, I have a hard time seeing the infamous "Myrish Swamp" scene appear. Cersei's inner monologue is integral to the scene and you simply won't be able to get that across in the television medium. I suppose they could use it as another example to get nudity on the show, but I think they'll have other opportunities for that, such as with the Sand Snakes and will go that route instead. They cut similar scenes with Dany and her handmaidens.

People always panic about characters not making the show. I remember pretty well a lot of people were crazy saying that Blackfish and Edmure would be cut from the show and the Red Wedding would be Robb's.

As for the specific cases mentioned:

JonCon- Varys hasn't raised Aegon, Varys can't lead armies. He's in.

Arianne- Too important to be cut.

Wyman Manderly- see above.

Taena- I'd say cut for sure, but I have my doubts D&D will resist a Cersei lesbian scene.

Arys Oakheart- probably cut.

Bowen Marsh- Might make it, but it's possible his role will be taken by Thorne, which I hope doesn't happen.

I fear they're going to cut Manderly. The Freys are very much out of the picture now, the northern storyline is very much reduced to the Boltons, and there won't be a lot of time to really dive into this sideplot. Bolton vs. Stannis doesn't really need Manderly (as sad as ist sounds).

JC - if Aegon is in, he is in too. Neither Varys or Illyrio raised and protected him, can be military commanders or have remotely similar personal motivation. If Doran can get Areo as his enforcer, Aegon will not become abandoned orphan with nobody looking for him whole time.

Manderly - he could be cut and replaced with some Umber for primary reason to get Northern conspiracy, Davos and Rickon plot together without it being too complicated and requiring too much screen time

Arianne - i could not imagine it before the casting leak, but now i believe she will be cut. I believe she can be cut and merged with other characters without it doing too much damage, if for some reason D+D decided to cut her.

Taena - probably cut, i think D+D would rather use Cersei screen time for her to interact with already existing characters rather then new character, which serve one purpose only and that is a lesbian scene. But that scene purpose is far from being pointless nudity. It show Cersei is far from being a feminist. I wish they keep that part of Cersei characterization. Maybe they could give this to Nymeria, she could play Cersei and push her against the Faith, while at same time Tyene would push the Faith against Cersei. Ellaria i can not see she could take that role. She will be back in Dorne, seemingly part of Qeenmaker plot and obvious person who could be send with Elia to Aegon instead of Arianne if she is cut.

This is pretty much what I think will happen, but with Joncon as well. Once Varys leaves for KL Joncon will still be doing stuff in the Stormlands so merging their characters don't make sense. At the very least Varys will need someone to talk to once Tyrion is gone.

What's this casting leak everyone is talking about? Cutting Arianne makes zero sense. And I don't see how legitimizing the Sand Snakes would make up for it. They still wouldn't be Doran's heirs, Doran's sons would. What a great idea, let's spend a lot of time in Dorne but cut its main character (who just happens to be a very attractive and sexually liberated woman, just the type HBO would want cut, eh?) and oh, let's eliminate the thing that makes Dorne most obviously different, interesting and progressive - the fact that the rules of inheritance don't favor men, and that Doran's heir is his eldest child - daughter, not one of his sons! Yes, that really makes sense!

How? Leaving aside the fact that it would be incredibly offensive to replace Doran's female heir (and this is the whole fucking point, that she's a woman who's an heir in her own right, even though she has younger brothers), Trystane is not even Doran's oldest son. He is his "youngest", as they said on the show.

There was a leaked audition tape with an actress reading lines for Obara Sand. In the scene that was read by the actress, Tyene and Obara talk with Bronn in Dorne. Fans thought that speaking with someone like Bronn (who will probably be given a major role in Dorne) should be someone important like Arianne. There is unnamed woman in the scene that also has lines. Some think that that is Arianne, others that it's Ellaria, others think that it's just some unnamed extra. And I do agree with you, cutting Arianne makes no sense, but seeing what D&D have been doing and saying that S5 will see major changes, I don't think we should rule out that possibility.

As for Trystane, aging him up to 18 years old means that he is already fit to rule Dorne, and people also think that he will have some of Arianne's characteristics.

Again, I agree that Arianne shouldn't be cut, and what you are saying about women, the laws of inherintance in Dorne, and how that stands with HBO.
