Off the hop: if you're having password problems, opt to reset your password by having the reset link sent to your email address. no current problems, but I thought I'd give an update on an old one.

I couldn't change my member title (original post here). I was having the same problem again, but this time I checked all the fields. In the 'Contact Methods' area, the 'website' field had 'www.htpp//' already filled in. I've never touched that field and didn't have any issues changing anything before, but I tried erasing it so the field was totally blank. That did the trick - no problems saving. Just in case you run across this problem again.

More of a problem with the wiki than with the forum, but I figured this would be the best place to report it.

Whilst editing the wiki, when adding a small piece of text, every now and then, a rather large part of the page get's deleted. For as far as I can tell, I'm not doing anything wrong, so I'm wondering if thus is just a hick-up that can occur (and has thus occured by coincidence with me several times today), or whether there actually is something wrong.

When I undo the last edit (after which part of my text had disappeared), the text returns, though my new text is then, of course, missing.

I'm working on the wiki page Years after Aegon's Conquest/Theories Ages

Edit: Is is possible that wiki-pages have a maximum capacity? I don't really know anything about that, but I'd find it strange that most of the text will be deleted when editing some small bit of text in

Also, the text doesn't seem to be completely gone. You can still see it on the editing page when it happens, but no longer on the actual viewing page.

Edit 2: I've currently fixed this by making a continuity page, after reading this wikipedia article on sizes. If there's a better way, please let me know.

Rhaenys,

I will look into it when I've time, but the Wikimedia guideline of splitting very large pages up does makes sense to me in general. I don't know if they have it in there for technical reasons, but for readability it's probably best.

At a guess we may be running into a PHP related limit, but we'll see.

I agree that the Years After Aegon's Conquest has grown way too much (and is due to grow even further with the publication of the World Book), and it is time to create individual pages for every year (as in wikipedia). I may try to work in this during summer, if no one else does it before.

As per the theories on the birthdates of countless characters, they'll probably be better placed in their charaters' wikis.

As per the theories on the birthdates of countless characters, they'll probably be better placed in their charaters' wikis.

I wouldn't mind helping with the pages for all the years.

The calculations, I thought, might be better on a separate page, since they're not really a theory as, for example, the "Aegon is fake" theory on the Aegon Targaryen/Theory page, but just simple calculations. Placing the shorter ones on the character pages could be done in the references, but those that need a bigger explanation cannot be done, I think.

I still have some characters to add in there. Is there another lay-out which would be better?

Perhaps as a solution for the calculations:

Instead of [Character name]/Theories create a page of [Character name]/Calculations for those king of things. Because calculations don't count as theories, in my book, but this would make it easier to refer to. Then, as a reference, there could simply be a link to that calculation page. And all those pages would fall into their own category. Would this be the solution for that?

That would mean that a lot of new pages will have to be created (but since I did all those calculations, I won't mind doing them, it'll just be copy-pasting it all, no problem).

I do feel that the calculations should be on there, since in the beginning, I got to wonder how people got the idea of Catelyn having been born in 264AC, for example. And when the World Book comes out, I expect that several of those /Calculations pages can be deleted, if it is simply stated in the World Book that Character A was born in year X, for example.

But then, would it be a problem if there were many new pages created for that?

ETA: about 25% of the calculations are for members of House Frey. They could all be put together on one page, I guess..

My suggestion would be to avoid subpages when possible, and explain it as a reference as it has been done in the Brynden Tully article. As you say, narrowing the interval of a birthdate is not theorizing, so it can go inside the text of the main article.

Ok, I've been trying this, and until this far, it works. If it can be done this way for all the calculations, that the /Theories Ages pages can be deleted, and the issue of missing text is no longer a problem.

And if it thus all works out, putting in the calculations as a reference, than this is no longer an issue, for these pages, at least.

I'm guessing it was just a matter of a page that was too big. At least, that's the way I've understood Wikipedia's explanation. But, for now, this has no rush, I think the solution L'Ă“s Pelut suggested will work just fine for this.

  • 3 weeks later...

I was on my phone and by mistake, hit "Report" instead of "Edit" while messaging a friend. :bawl:

How can I correct that, or tell a Mod. to disregard?

Sorry for the late reply.

This actually happens more than you might think. You don't need to alert us to it as it usually apparent, but sending a mod a PM would be the way to alert us to it if you wanted to.

:)

We are all getting it as far as I can tell from the Bad Pop Ups thread.

It's an expansion of the link buttons for the various social media feeds.

Dunno what's going wrong but I'm sure it will be addressed.
