Game of Thrones Leads Emmy Field

Westeros

Recommended Posts

The Primetime Emmys have announced their nominations for this year’s award, and the ever.popular Game of Thrones leads the field with a total of 19 nominations, including a number in the “major” categories: Best Drama, Supporting Actor (Peter Dinklage), Supporting Actress (Lena Headey), Guest Actress (Diana Rigg), Writing, and Direction (Neil Marshall for Watchers on the Wall). Other nominations are Casting in a Drama, two entries in the Cinematography category (for Anette Haellmigk, who acted as director of photography for a six of last season’s episodes, as well as Jonathan Freeman, also responsible for several episodes), Costuming, Hairstyling, Interactive Program (for HBO’s use of Instagram and Facebook), Makeup, Music Composition, Prosthetic Makeup, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, Stunt Coordination, Art Direction, and Visual Effects.

It’s a tough field in the major categories, especially with Breaking Bad‘s final season under consideration, and performances by its supporting cast in Aaron Paul and Anna Gunn, while a HBO sister program True Detective has Cary Fukunaga’s direction and Nic Pizzolatto’s writing to contend with as well. Still, as they say, it’s an honor to be nominated. The Emmy awards will be handed out on August 25th.

I've been meaning to lodge my complaint about the lack of Pedro Pascal in the nominations. I do think he made this season in many ways. I'm not sure if he'd be down for supporting actor or guest actor, but either way, it's a damn shame. I feel........crushed, so to speak.

So why was True Detective not nominated as a miniseries (same for Woody and Matthew)?

Because it's a regular series. Being an anthology doesn't mean you're a miniseries, though some other shows have been allowed to get away with that to increase their chances of getting nominated. TD is confident enough to compete in the drama category, rather than take the out.

And if TD gets best series instead of miniseries that it would be more prestigious win.

Too bad about no Charles Dance nom., since he won't be back. I'm not too disappointed for Maisie and Sophie because they have the next few years to get nominated and hopefully win.

EDIT: Talking about TD, Michael Lombardo said that HBO will announce the new cast next week. He also said some interesting stuff about GoT's future for anyone who wants to seek out the article...

mmm i don't know if PD could beat Aaron Paul's performance on breaking bad.

Definitely enjoyed the camera work and direction of 'watchers on the wall'

I agree about lack of pedro pascal. his performance stood out more than Lena Headey's this season. I feel like next season will be Lena Headey's

It will definitely be Paul vs. DInklage in that Emmy battle. Colonel Green pointed out in the other thread that one shouldn't necessarily expect the actor nominated for the show's final season to win for sentimental reasons, because Emmy voters don't necessarily vote that way, although they do sometimes: Friday Night Lights' first Emmy awards (in non-Creative categories) came after its final season (Best Actor and Outstanding Writing).

Did he? Assuming you're referring to today's presser, he said no movie and that the show won't end with six seasons, both of which we already figured.

^Yeah, that's what I was referring. While GrrM said today that the movie wasn't his idea and it was being talked about. Who should I believe? I'll go with Lombardo since GrrM wanted four season out of AFFC and ADWD IIRC, which is frankly ridiculous.

I'm ok with everything, except for Charles and Pedro's snubs. Like Michelle's they hurt because their roles have ended. I thought the Mountain against the Viper episode would have been highlighted too.

Still, let us not forget that HBO received the most nominations, and GoT was its number one show. That, plus the show's viewership and pop culture status=$$$. This show is a cash cow, golden goose, whatever, and I'm so happy! If the network is happy, this viewer is happy too as more seasons will be green lit.

Does anyone know why GOT has no leading actor or actress?

Not one can have more than one 'lead' actor or actress..I guess?. not sure who the lead actress would be.....

But see Peter would be the 'lead' in the series.

So if there is no lead, and every body is in a 'supporting' role who are they supporting?

(The other supports? That seems odd.)

HBO only list 'CAST' ... so one wonders if all this is by contract?

Dianna Rigg is not listed , even in the breakout profile as a 'guest actor'.

(There is a '.........' to break the main cast from the , what?, secondary cast?

Yeah I know can't trust anything HBO has on the cast-list.

Wikipedia does have a list of Main Characters and a long list of Supporting Characters , but that seems to be their call, which is more or less correct.

Kind of bothers me that there will never be a 'main' character nomination which skews who can be in the Emmy nomination category.

SAG has nominated GOT twice for Ensemble in a Drama Series , be nice to see a win there.

Actually, he will. He said somewhere he'll be back for some scenes in Season 5. If he manages to portray the best-acted corpse ever, maybe he'll win! ^_^

As for Aaron Paul, I like him, but I don't see what's so Emmy-worthy about his stuff last season.

He did say that? That's great. I did highly suspect he would do a turn as Tywin's corpse in the show, I will LMAO if they do the smell and the spreading smile, but I doubt he'd get an Emmy nod for it, LOL I wonder, would that be considered good or bad, a nomination for the corpse work?
