House Larose
Required disclaimer: I have just been googling Gendry for a while to see if I could find anyone that has posted this idea yet - and I couldn't find it. Apologies if someone has already stated this theory. I believe that Gendry has a much larger role to play - and I think that role is actually that of "Blacksmith" If my idea is correct, somehow he brings back Valyrian Steel It would go down something like this: While forging a sword he cuts himself and bleeds into the molten metal. He keeps working anyways. He then notices that the metal seems to have a different look and feel to it. Eventually have the end result of it being Valyrian Steel. Nobody knows how it is made - only that it contains magical properties and can't be made without someone with Valyrian blood. Perhaps that is because it is litteral. He does have the distant Targ bloodlines It feels like he has a larger role to play going forward and this could be how it happens.
Lady Wylla Manderly
I agree that we will probably see Gendry once again. Though I don't think he'll bring back Valyrian steel as you suggested. Gendry may have some distant Targ blood, but there haven't been any magical elements in his story to indicate that. I assume your theory is based on the fact that his former master knows how to work Valyrian steel. Well, I always assumed Gendry would be the one to REFORGE Ice. Him forging Valyrian steel from scratch might be a stretch, but what I mentioned seems a bit more possible? (Though probably still a pipe dream of mine :D)

He has been apprenticed for a long enough time now that he has probably mastered most everything about forging. I do hope someone brings Valyrian steel back though. Not sure who else, if not Gendry

Not sure who else, if not Gendry Well, if the "dragon steel" (that's been mentioned to work against the Others) is indeed Valyrian steel, that would certainly help in the future. Though if its secrets are rediscovered, I really see an intellectual discovering old tomes rather than an illiterate apprentice finding it while experimenting. Red Wedding Cake
GRRM has a distaste for magic swooping in to save the day. Everything involving magic, especially blood magic, has had bizarre and troublesome side effects. Lady Stoneheart, shade of the evening, Daeny's dragons hatching. Stannis' leeches certainly brought a few people to tears. One of Robert's bastards will have some importance soon, if the show is any indication. Didn't want to use that as a point though. They could have easily used a new actor for the role of Edric and not had Gendry come back. Yet they know the future. Perhaps it is a sign Gendry has a bigger role

I think the "dragonsteel" is actually weapons made of dragonbone. But since we don't really know, it could be VS. And even if it's not, someone needs to put Ice back together for House Stark. I think the secret to VS involves dragon fire. Maybe Sam and Gendry will figure it out together.
Leonardo
Gendry hadn't even made a sword by the time he has to leave King's Landing. No, just no to every idea in this topic so far.

I'm suddenly reminded of BBC Merlin, when Merlin and Morgana separately made special swords by getting a dragon breathe fire on them :D I always thought the forging of VS was more related to dragon "blood" (quite literally) but I suppose we might see. Lady Wylla Manderly
Gendry hadn't even made a sword by the time he has to leave King's Landing. No, just no to every idea in this topic so far. He does know how to make a sword now, though. Gendry was at his forge, bare-chested beneath his leather apron. He was beating on a sword as if he wished it were a foe, his sweat-soaked hair falling across his brow. [...] He took it for an insult. “I’m a knight. That sword will be mine own, once it’s done.” Furthermore, I already called my speculation a possible "pipe dream" so it's not like we're entirely convinced of our "theories" we're discussing here. It's a discussion. No need to be so brusque and rude about it.

Lady Wylla Manderly
If Robert Baratheon was his father than he does have blood of the dragon. Robert had a Tagaryen mother. Yes, the OP mentioned that, and so did I when I said: "Gendry may have some distant Targ blood, but there haven't been any magical elements in his story to indicate [him working with Valyrian steel in the future]." Though I'm not sure if forging a Valyrian steel requires blood of the dragon. We don't know ANYTHING about the makings Valyrian steel except that it was made by Valyrians and its secrets were lost. The fact that it's only made by the Valyrians doesn't necessarily mean MAGIC!! It could just mean that they were forbidden to share its secrets.
