KJ Parker and Kameron Hurley are the authors you are looking for.

I've read "the Company" by KJ Parker, but thought it was kind of dull except for some of the flash backs and the crazy chick. Do her other works have more zing?

It is a different type of grit. While I found The Company a bit tedious ascwell, and by far NY least favorite of the author, the style is consistent. Try the Folding Knife, it is the usual rec. If you hate it then move along, you probably won't like the rest.

Thanks for the great/horrible/disgusting recs everyone!

Just loaded up on books last night at my local store.

I may have been self conscious, but I felt like the guy checking out my purchase gave me a look like I had human remains sitting in my freezer.

Anyway, I compiled a list (Author, Title, Genre, Comments). There may be mistakes, let me know and i'll try to correct

· Glen Cook-The Black Company-Fantasy-very dark, gritty military fantasy

· -Legend of Drizzt series-Fantasy-Menzoberranzan is a pretty dark and twisted place

· John Hornor Jacobs-Southern Gods-Horror-

· Matthew Woodring Stover-The Acts of Caine-SFF-First book Heroes Die

· Richard Morgan-Takeshi Kovacs series-Sci-Fi-First book Altered Carbon

· Ian M Banks-Against a Dark Background-Sci-Fi-complete standalone

· Ian M Banks-Use of Weapons-Sci-Fi-part of the Culture sequence, but reading it as a standalone is fine

· KJ Parker-Anything except "The Company"-Fantasy-

· Scott Lynch-The Gentleman Bastard Sequence-Fantasy-

· Kameron Hurley-Gods War-Sci-Fi-

· Bernard Cornwell-The Warlord Chronicles-Fantasy-Amazing and bloody battles

· MD Lachlan-Wolfsangel-Fantasy-Norse gods, Vikings, werewolves and pure awesomeness

· Jesse Bullington-The Sad Tale of the Brothers Grossbart-Fantasy-although the rest of the book doesn't live up to the absolutely disgusting first chapter

· Glen Duncan-The Last Werewolf-Horror-A violent, bloody, and brilliant trilogy

· Warren Hammond-KOP books--similar to Takeshi Kovacs trilogy

· Charlie Huston-Any of his titles--

· Simon Clark-Blood Crazy-Horror-Twisted

· J.F. Gonzales-Survivor-Horror-twisted as well

· James Ellroy-The LA quartet-Hard Boiled-Starts with "The Black Dahlia"

· Cormac McCarthy-Blood Meridian-Fiction-

· Bret Ason Ellis-American Psycho-Fiction-

· Andy Remic-The Iron Wolves-Fantasy-Solidly written violence porn

· David Gemmell-Any of his titles-Fantasy-Not twisted but very violent

· JG Ballard-Crash--Not just blood, either. Pretty much any fluid found within a human body or automobile you could want

· Matt Lawrence-Broken Empire Trilogy-Fantasy-

· Robert E. Howard-The Sowers of the Thunder-Fantasy-It features stories about the Crusades, and they are vibrantly written, and do feature violence. My personal favorite is The Lion of Tiberias, which is heartbreaking but riveting with a bittersweet ending.

· Neal Asher-Any of his titles--

If you're looking for violence and bloodlust, it really doesn't get more violent than Doomsday Warrior, by Ryder Stacey.

ONE HUNDRED YEARS AFTER RUSSIA'S LIGHTNING WORLD WAR III VICTORY, AMERICA STRUGGLES OUT OF THE RADIOACTIVE RUBBLE TO THROW OFF THE SHACKLES OF SOVIET DOMINATION. LEADING THE AMERICAN REBELS IN THEIR MOST DESPERATE HOUR IS THE ULTIMATE SOLDIER OF SURVIVAL, THE DOOMSDAY WARRIOR HIMSELF, TED ROCKSON. BUT EVEN ROCKSON CANNOT ESCAPE THE CARNAGE AND THE RUSSIANS PLUCK HIM - BADLY INJURED - FROM THE BATTLEFIELD AND ADD HIM TO THEIR SLAVE LABOUR FORCE.

THE SOVIETS DON'T KNOW WHO THEY'VE CAPTURED. AND ROCKSON, SUFFERING FROM LOSS OF MEMORY, DREAMS ALONG WITH THE OTHER WRETCHED CAPTIVES OF THE FAMOUS DOOMSDAY WARRIOR WHO MIGHT SOME DAY RESCUE THEM FROM SLAVERY. BUT SOMEWHERE BURIED IN HIS SOUL ROCKSON'S TRUE SELF FIGHTS TO EMERGE. WHEN IT DOES, NOTHING WILL STOP HIM FROM STRIKING A SMASHING BLOW AGAINS THE ENEMY - OR DIE BRINGING GLORY TO THE NAME OF THE....

DOOMSDAY WARRIOR

If you're not sold (and honestly I'm not sure how you could possibly not be sold already), you can read extensive reviews led by the incomparable MinDonner here and here and here. Mandatory reading for the board really, and nothing better for a Friday afternoon.

  • 2 weeks later...

I'm about halfway through 'Fevre Dream' by GRRM and it's really good. It's about vampires if you're not failiar with it, but its nice and gory, well written, etc.

Oh, and another book I always recommend: World War Z by Max Brooks. Yes, the movie sucked, BUT, the book is nothing like the movie and is super, super awesome. Read it!
