Season 5 Directors Revealed

Westeros

Recommended Posts

Now that filming is soon to commence later this month, EW—as always!—gets the scoop on just who’s directing each episode of season 5. Some interesting new names in this one, and some interesting details:

Episodes 501 and 502: Michael Slovis
Episodes 503 and 504: Mark Mylod
Episodes 505 and 506: Jeremy Podeswa
Episodes 507 and 508: Miguel Sapochnik
Episodes 509 and 510: David Nutter

As James Hibberd points out, David Benioff and Dan Weiss aren’t taking up director duties as they have with the last few seasons, and other than Nutter every one of the directors is brand new to the series…

Well, sort of. Jeremy Podeswa was set to direct at least one episode of season 2—almost certainly “Blackwater”—when a family situation forced him to drop out. His taking the middle set of episodes may be indicative that there’s some sort of big turn—potentially something action-heavy—taking place in those episodes, given not only the fact that he had been pegged to direct the action-heavy “Blackwater” but has also directed episodes of HBO’s The Pacific, including (with David Nutter) the episode “Iwo Jima” about the Battle of Iwo Jima.

Also of note is the way that every director is directing two episode, contiguous blocks. That may provide some advantages for the scheduling of filming.

It will be intersting to see whether those direction blocks will also reflect the storylines and therefore the writing and respective authors. Writing continuity seems even more important to me than directing continuity, which prooved a bit problematic in the past (like s4e09 which felt a bit lost and isolated after the shocker in the previous episode).

Book Spoilers

That should be the way of it because many arcs of Season 5 should be mainly isolated from the others. Dorne, Ironborn, KL (Tywin's funeral, Tommen's wedding) can all be handled seperately. Tyrion's travel should be synchronized with Dany's arc in Meereen, which are also isolated from the rest (except Quentyn's arc - I am curious whether they will cast him or use Trystane). Arya's story in Braavos does not correspond to any other story arcs. Bran is also similar to Arya, though they might shoot some scenes for him with Reek.

No Alik Sakharov :frown5: Apparently he's directing this new pirate series. I'm not a big pirate fan. Can't judge it without seeing it though. Hope he at least does some cinematography for GoT S5, but I hardly think so. No Michelle McLaren either, at least she does something interesting (Better call Saul).

It's nice the show gives a shot to new blood for directing.

I can totally understand Graves, Sakharov and McLaren for wanting to take a year break. Directing an episode of GoT must be damn exhaustive !

Hell, I struggled directing my short 10 minutes school project. GoT must be so demanding.

And looking forward to see what newcomers will bring !

I want more sequence-shot in GoT ! The one at the battle of CB and the one at Hoster's funerals were great ! The show needs more of them !

Episode 9 season 4 felt no more lost and isolated than S2E9 to me, even with what happened in E8. It did feel very CONDENSED for just 50 min! (The review, into and closing credits were 10 min long!?)..... Putting off the conclusion to episode 10 was fine with me.... but I did feel , with the assault from the south combined with a 'probing' assault from the north jammed a lot of things together that , for narrative sake, should have been a little elaborated. No scene at of Mance doing something! Talking strategy or just to the troops. I didn't see anything wrong with the writing except that if they were going to give ep 10 65 min. why not give E9 60?!

Direction was fine, I don't know how action sequence are written anyway!

I had forgotten Jeremy Podeswa had done more intense action sequences , in Pacific, than Marshall! Boy The Pacific was a stunner, very well done, 200 million dollars across 10 episodes, if only GOT could get 100 million for one season!

Like I said elsewhere George has usually given away what episode he is writing the next season, so I wonder ... will he write one?

This may be a heavy D&D writing season, I guess Bryan is in the mix again?

Season 3 only had one 'outside' writer , Vanessa Taylor , and season 4 had none, I wonder what that means?

Yeah, someone should really try and find out about George, but I'm sure he has one. The show is reaching a point where it will start treading in uncharted waters, and I think having George as one of the episode writers becomes even more essential.

As far as I know, this will be the season with the least amount of D&D involvement (at least credits wise), since they are probably going to write only 6 episodes and are directing none.

Bryan Cogman gets 2, Dave Hill gets 1, GRRM 1. I don't know if Venessa Taylor will be in or not, but if she is (which I heavily doubt), then D&D will only have 5 to work on. I expect the scripts to become even better due to less pressure in other areas (unless adapting the books itself was extremely hard here).

I had forgotten , I can't remember where, how many D&D were going to work on.

Well seems to me they had a composition problems this last season, a real logic glitch at the Bloody Gate in E8, and some kind of muddled editing chaos in ep 6 at the Dreadfort.... and overall minor , but ragged, editing in episodes thru out the season.

Just seems everybody was so busy some eyes and ears were distracted.

I haven't watched Shameless extensively, but I've seen that some posters here have. Did Mark Mylod do anything interesting in his directing for the show? (He's directed for both the British and the American versions). I was somewhat underwhelmed in seeing that the guy who directed Ali G Indahouse had been chosen, but given how people seem to love Shameless, I wondered if anyone could point to good work on Mylod's part.

He was nominated for a Primetime Emmy and has won 2 BAFTAs.

I didn't realize he started directing in 1995 and has a ton of TV under his belt.
