Meaning behind Dany's Dragons Colors

Recommended Posts

Hey folks,

This is my first time ever using this site so don't mind if this is commonplace knowledge or something I'm just completely missing. I was wondering if its commonly accepted that Dany's dragons colors bear any major meaning, Drogon being black and grey possibly having to do with the Night's Watch/ Jon Snow, Viserion being Gold (Fire being red), possibly having to do with Tyrion, and Rhaegal being green and bronze having to do with some house which is green and bronze. I don't know if I really buy into this at all but i was curious to see if anyone had any idea to that or if its just random colors

I am certain they are not random, but it remains to be seen who will ride which dragon. It seems unlikely to me that anyone besides Dany will ride Drogo, though.

"Dany will ride Drogo" teehee... I know it was a typo, but it made me giggle.

Anyhoo, you're right. Dany has already taken to Drogon's back in ADWD, so unless there really is a horn that can control dragons, no one else will ride him.

I think the colors of Dany's dragons all have meaning.

If we look back at the first Dance of Dragons two side were involved. One side calling themselves the "blacks" the others "the greens"

I think this is a big clue to why one of Dany's dragons is black and one is green.

Dany will ride Drogon in the second dance. Aka the black dragon making the "blacks" live again. Also the female in the first dance was on the "black" side.

Aegon will ride Rhaegal in the second dance. Aka the green dragon making the "greens" live again. Also in the first dance the greens were led by a Aegon.

A coincidence? I think it all matches up a little to well for that.

As to the white dragon? I personally think it will die in the first upcoming battle and if not a 1/2 Stark will control it. I mean he already has a white direwolf right?

Drogon is black and red, not grey. Viserion is cream and gold. As others have said it is all but certain that Dany will ride Drogon.

I think Viserion is meant for Jon, given that Ghost is all white as well, and the gold around his horns and spinal crest are to symbolize that he will wear a crown.
Rhaegal, I have no clue. Speculating Tyrion, if the whole he's a bastard from Aerys raping Joanna is true, Tyrion has a green eye and his hair could be symbolic of the bronze eyes. its a stretch but hey, that's what these discussions are for

I agree Viserion could be meant for Jon given the white coloring.

But we have to remember a certain Targ whose own personal coat of arms was a WHITE dragon. I could really see Bloodraven taking control of Viserion (if Viserion lives that long which I personally don't think he will).

As for Rhaegal, Aegon is going to need a dragon to ride for a Dance of Dragons 2.0 to happen which GRRM has confirmed will happen. Also it fits nicely a black dragon vs a green dragon again . =]

I wrote a detailed post a few years ago analyzing the symbolic significance of the dragon colors. I will try to find it in my files to share in this new thread. This may take me some time. I do recall theorizing on the colors and their relationship to the direwolves of House Stark - which I had linked with correlations to the colors of the old gods, weirwoods, those who sing, and BloodRaven.

I'm rereading right now and near the end of CoK. I'm seeing the color green alot and I think it is linked to treachery and betrayal. My most recent encounter was Tyrion remembering the green wildfire reflected in Ser Mandon's white armor. Whether this association bears out I've yet to see, but if it does it may hint at the future of Danny's green dragon.

I could definitely see a Black versus Green thing between Dany's Drogon and Aegon's Rhaegal as others have mentioned. Dany having Drogon seems to be a sure thing at any rate and a Dance of Dragons situation would explain the colors of both those two dragons as well as their riders. However, I've also thought it likely that Jon could ride Rhaegal just because the dragon was named for his (R+L=J assumed) father. I could see Jon riding Viserion as well because of Jon's connection to the color white (fighting against the White Walkers, opposite of Black of the Night's Watch, his direwolf Ghost is white, and he is known as Jon SNOW). However, I could also see Tyrion with Viserion because of the white dragon cyvasse game piece that seemed like a bit of foreshadowing. Really interesting to ponder all of it and seems like the colors can't just be random.
