ANXIETY

social anxiety.

i lose my nerve around strangers.

Practice when the stakes are very low. Make very short small talk when normally you'd say nothing ("Hello, how are you doing today" when you buy coffee, on the elevator, to your coworkers in the morning). Practice speaking in a confident voice when you say anything at all. Practice making eye contact and smiling in mundane social situations.

For about a year and half I was having what I thought was anxiety attacks. I was really sick everytime I got super stressed out so it was my logical conclusion. I fibally spoke to my GP about it a few days ago and she said my "anxiety attacks" were the perfect description of gall stones. which is a huge shock for me because I have tried dieting to see if it fixes my problem and it didn't so I ruled fatty foods out I had thought.

Speak to you dr and see if there are any other issues it could possibly be. If not then they should be able to help you find someone or something to help with the anxiety. IMO tablets can be great at relieving the symptoms but not with the underlying issue (which is why it took me so long to speak to my dr I thought I could find my problem and answers without her)

Is sex an option? If that's off the table, go to a social setting where people you know you have common interests will congregate. Then, just make very small talk. A bookstore, in my experience, is a great start. Good luck.

sex is a bit of a finicky subject.

im not unattractive, so its never been tough for me to get women's attention. however, when i started taking xanax for my anxiety, i had "cough, cough" performance issues. however the xanax made me a fuckin social butterfly. catch 22.

so ironically, im off the pills with a fully functioning system, but i lose my shit around people. its kind of shitty.

Having a blog helped me a lot. First, around 10 people read me, then, 1000. Then, I even ended up winning an award for that. Then, I finally met those people and realise they weren't strangers. Some of them are now big friends of me, who know the real me, not the blogger. Either way, I'd say it "boost" my confidence.

I wouldn't recommend alcohol to get over anxiety.

You say you just think you've lost confidence. So, do things, achieve and accomplish things about which you can take pride in - even if they're not related in any way to social engagements.

And you might want to think and reflect on why you think you've lost confidence - what changed from how things are now to how they were when you had more confidence.

In general, meditation does help. Numerous studies show that simply staying still and focusing on your breathing, every day, will over time (8 weeks, I've read) start to help you out in various ways.

I'd also talk with your psych about how the xanax gave you sex performance issues and if there's maybe something equivalent which might not give you that side effect. There usually are, but the only way to see if you will get a particular side effect is to try them out.

Skip the alcohol. It just makes things worse. I know this because I keep trying that experiment over and over again and it just doesn't work. Its a dangerous path to walk.

I have suffered from anxiety for years. It can be very debilitating and leave you unable to function. I feel for you :(

That being said I don't like pills either but after trying to self-medicate, a zillion different medicines and counselers/psychiatrists I have found 2 things that work:

1) Alcohol - 1 drink & my anxiety is gone. I'm the life of the party. On the down side you run the risk of becoming an alcoholic, it only lasts for the night you are drinking, and you will probably spemd the next day hungover & more anxious than when you started.

2) Cymbalta - I am mostly anxiety free the majority of the time due to this medicine. I don't like taking pills either but when it came down to living my life miserably or taking a little pill every day the choice was easy. The down side is it does not work instantly. You have to take it 4 or 6 weeks before you get the full effect. Other than that I really don't have any negative side effects. It makes my mouth a little dry sometimes.

That being said I think different medicines work better for different people. I wish you the best of luck and hope that you find something that works for you

I understand your hesitancy at being a human guinea pig when it comes to finding the pill that works best (been there, done that), but there usually is an anti-anxiety medication that works for everyone. It's just a matter of finding the one that works for you. Xanax is good but leaves me sleepy and sluggish. Klonopin (generic- Clonazepam) works by slowing your heart rate without any of the dulling side effects. Works like a charm for me, in addition to a daily workout.
