Discussing the possibility of Young griff being cut

I think he will make it, as he wont actually take that much screen time perhaps 5 episodes max. Also GRRM has heavily hinted at a Dance of Dragons 2.0. So cutting him would make things quite messy. Also fAegon is Varys's endgame, and many people are interested in what are Varys's true intentions. Plus I have the feeling that people might like his character as a baby supposedly dead or an imposter would also add a new dynamic to the show. So I'm optimistic he will make the cut, remember they are casting Maggy the Frog, so surely fAegon can make the cut, as it also takes away from Tyrion's story and D&D love Tyrion so I think we will get fAegon and JonCon

I doubt they will cut him. Remember that up until now, readers don't know what Varys wants and why is he doing what he does. Aegon is what he is doing. I'm sure that at least, besides all of the flaws and mistakes, HBO has made a good job at showing how Littlefinger and Varys are the main "players", and they play against the other. But so far, we haven't really see Varys doing anything. It's recently in book 5 when we find out his game.

Now, what I'm worried about is Illyrio (I remembered him yesterday while watching Speed Racer, heh!). If Varys is travelling along with Tyrion, there is a chance he's replacing him. If he's indeed replacing him, would that completely shut down the theory of him being Aegon's father? Varys can't be the father (he doesn't have the 'equipment').

They might just remove the father aspect altogether if hes cut, they really only need a mother figure(Lemore) and Jon Connington to establish those were the people teaching him and training him.

But I think it would do unsullied a great disservice if they remove Illyrio from the backstory with Aegon. Its clear in Season 1, and unsullied people catch it on rewatching, that Illyrio and Varys are plotting together. To all of a sudden remove that would confuse them, wonder why they included it in the first place if it goes nowhere, and kind of removes some of intricate aspect unsullied have come to love about the show(they love that things in Season 1 will fully be explored in like Season 4 or something).

I know David and Dan love to be less subtle when it comes to the shows story and lore (Which is weird since they are both writers, and being an aspiring comic book writer I think subtlety is a huge friend) but to just remove elements clearly hinted at all the way back in the beginning would be just bad planning.

I really hope the Griffs are included. I really like this storyline. I also hope Illyrio is there. I think Varys is going to make the introductions. This ties Varys to Illyrio which leds back to Dany's wedding in season 1 and also to Aegon going forward.

In the books you can descibe these links in words easily enough but on screen you're better doing it in person. So having Varys, Illyrio and Tyrion all together would make some interesting scenes.

If they drop Aegon then it would be the first major change that would really disappoint me. All the other changes have been good on the whole. Some things I'd wished they hadn't changed but was ok with them. Dropping this storyline would not sit well with me at all.

I've said this a lot, but we really can't predict until TWOW is in our hands. If he affects the end-game in a remarkable way, he's in. But given the fact that a TV adaptation requires a cleaner story (and thus greater parsimony as far as new characters and subplots are concerned), his exclusion would make sense.

I don't have the best feeling about his inclusion, because last season Oberyn didn't call him by name to Tyrion, when he definitely had the opportunity. Yes, the GC was name-dropped, but it's hard to tell if that's fan-service or foreshadowing (same with the merman pin the Manderly at the RW was sporting). Either way it will work, but the cost of doing a visual adaptation means that some corners will need to be cut.

I love the Griffs and this plot-line in general, especially because I tend to like Varys, so I just hope that if they don't make the cut, Varys is still given a suitable master plan that doesn't undercut his characterization.

I haven't read anything in this thread because I'm trying to avoid potential major spoilers, so can someone just tell me has he ever been mentioned on the show? I just looked him up and it says he's the nephew of Daenarys?

this is a huge spoiler so read at your own risk

Aegon, son of rhaegar, was supposedly saved by varys and has been trained to be a warrior and is going back to westeros to reclaim the throne. He might be a fake tho.

I have a couple theories on show Aegon.

One, remember how in season three they jumped straight into revealing that Ser Barristan was Ser Barristan and didn’t bother doing the Arstan Whitebeard story? We don’t know if Aegon is a pretender or not everything is speculation until the book gives us a clear answer. If he is in fact a Blackfyre I’d be worried they’d go ahead and say that up front and also throw in the story of the Blackfyres at this time. I mean Storm of Swords had been out for years so Ser Barristan was really a minor spoiler, but they need to streamline quite a bit to finish this in seven seasons.

Two, they may have set Maester Aemon up to have a bastard in season 4. Maester Aemon gave up the throne to become a maester, if we followed the line of succession a bastard bloodline of Maester Aemon could be considered by some to be a better heir to the throne especially by the end of the events of DWD. Imagine Jon Connington and Young Griff being combined into someone who may have been in the court of Aerys II who was a friend of Rhaegar that unknowingly was his cousin, and now that Rhaegar is dead he finds out he has a bastard claim to the throne and would want to do right by Rhaegar. I’d almost be ok with it depending on what actor played them.

what makes aegon special is not only his claim to the throne but also the possibility of him being the third head of the dragon. So a new character would really fit in. It needs to be aegon, son of rhaegar

If Aegon is included, the show will probably make it explicit whether Varys believes him to be Rhaegar's son or not. If Aegon is a fake, that at least explains his abrupt appearance out of nowhere. And if Aegon is real, than Varys is a Targaryan true believer rather than a pragmatist.

Aegon is older than Robb, so he's really wouldn't be a boy in the show, despite being naive.

Aegon is also older than Dany by at least a year, I wouldn't be surprised if they skip Tyrion giving Aegon the idea not to go to Dany, and they just jump straight into the Golden Company prepping to go west. Tyrion had a happy departure from King's Landing at least where Jaime is involved, I doubt he'd want to give the Golden Company the idea to take King's Landing and kill the brother he still respects and loves. Of course I wouldn't be surprised if they found a way to incorporate Jorah into the Shy Maid's exploits. Season 5 is going to be very interesting to say the least.

Oh I don't disagree, but with three seasons left and almost four books to condense either of the directions I said above wouldn't surprise me. It's taken four seasons to do three books and they haven't even finished the third book yet, the Lord Commander elections are still yet to come.

The one thing working in favor of keeping him, is that the general audience favors the political aspect of the show over the fantasy elements. Adding another major player for the Iron Throne might be a good thing to keep the audience Interested as many of the main characters have their focus elsewhere at this point.

The counter argument is that it might be a bad idea to introduce a major new political character and expect people to take him seriously, especially when he has a bland personality, isn't remotely badass, comes out of nowhere, and is obviously just a pawn. It might be better to spend time with the more interesting existing characters that we already have a history with. And cutting Aegon might have the convenient impact of cutting down the number of battles necessary to get to the resolution.

But maybe an older Aegon has potential to be more interesting than I'm giving him credit for. Especially since he will presumably be a major antagonist to Tommen, the Tyrells, and Dany, it could be interesting to have him be a temperamental ends-justify-the-means kind of guy, to Varys' horror culminating in Tommen's death, trouble with the common people, and Varys turning on his champion. Not sure how Dany fits in.

With the Boltons and Cersei probably having downfalls in season 5, it might be important to set up Aegon and Euron as season 6 antagonists. Walder Frey is more vermin than antagonist.

If Aegon is included I don't think they'll bother with the Blackfyre aspect. It would be less complicated to have him as just a random boy or the real thing. I don't think the Blackfyres have been mentioned on the show yet so I don't think they'll include them now.

He's in. The Gold Company references, and Oberyn's whole arc this last season is the perfect set up. And acting with Dinklage will only improve the scenes he's in. Just cast a solid JonCon, and whoever else Duck/Lemore/etc, and let them at it. The Blackfyre angle could be dropped, or not included/mentioned at all if he's actually Aegon. I think he's Faegon though, so we might get the Blackfyre angle explained through BR to Bran, or maybe even Varys to Tyrion. It is possible to adapt, if it turns out to be true.

I do hope we get to see MoPhat again, if only for a reunion scene with Varys, and a scene with his son would be pretty sweet too. The S1 actor was great, but if they have to recast, go for it, just make it happen!

Yeah, I agree. I think Varys' reputation as a sneaky player of the Game would be enough to have many viewers suspicious of Aegon's true identity without a whole Blackfyre conspiracy. Which tbh I didn't really pick up on in the books as it is quite complicated.

I didn't know for sure if he really was Aegon or not but I had no idea about the Blackfyres. I heard of them in the books but it wasn't until I read the forums and wikis that I got to grips with it. I don't see how it could be easily explained on screen without becoming a history lecture of exposition layered on with a trowel.

People really need to stop taking the BF stuff as gospel. I'd peg him as having a higher chance of being the Pisswater Prince, if he is in fact fraudulent.

But yes, if he's included, and if he's not really Rhaegar's son, and if he's secretly a BF, then I doubt the show would get into that complexity. We're also unlikely to get BR's backstory (or acknowledgement of his identity) for the same reason.
