Or, as the Yeard himself might say, "Oh, you think my books are fantasy? Obviously you're too immature and lack the moral celery to understand the IMPORTANT HUMAN THEMES I'm writing about." To end the Goodkind derail, John Irving has some wonderful character driven books that are generally worth reading. I'm a big fan of A Prayer for Owen Meany and The World According to Garp, my wife loves about everything he's done to a greater or lesser extent. I definitely going to try for something thats not Sci Fi. Some books I've enjoyed are really fantasy series like Harry Potter, ASOIAF (obviously), Malazan Book of the Fallen, Farseer Trilogy, Bartimaeus Trilogy, etc. Those Flashman Novels sound pretty interesting and I'm definitely going to check out classics such as Animal House.
