I’ve played around with a cryptic crossword about A Song of Ice and Fire. This board is probably in the very narrow audience for this kind of thing.

Good idea. I suggest we use this format.

1D I sent letters about Cersei’s first sexual relationship! (6)

Maybe STANNIS? Too many letters. Maybe EDDARD, but then what is the wordplay? Is this just a straight clue? I don’t get it. Any ideas?

(This one is safe to click, being just an example. No spoiler is actually in there.)

All right, we’re getting somewhere!

Analysis for 22:

Straight clue: Bard.
Answer: ABEL.
Wordplay: homophone, indicated by “sounds”, talented = able.

Analysis of 5:

Straight clue: seat of a noble house in the Vale of Arryn.

Answer: ALD ANCHOR, the seat of House Melcolm.

Wordplay: anagram , indicated by “destroyed”, the anagrammed letters are HONORCLAD

Oh, and using the wiki to look up obscure tertiary characters is not cheating at all. This is supposed to be challenging. But each clue is very carefully constructed and highly polished (within my own ability), so it’s perfectly fair.

For 6: rampant, in heraldry, actually describes rising or upended, so you don’t need to anagram: reverting is enough (it’s a down clue, so reverting is “raising”).

18 is close but not quite right. (You “invented” an S there, which I didn’t clue for, so that should tell you that something is off.) You’re close, though.

Trying again:

18 House Mallister’s heraldic beast, beheaded in the morning, catches sunlight. (6)

beast=EAGLE, beheaded=AGLE, morning=AM, catches sunlight=AGLEAM

I got the S from “catcheS”, as a present tense signifier, but after some thought I caught on to what you may have meant.

13 Atop Reek, he jerked Jaime’s junk. (10)

OATHKEEPER=anagram of “

Atop Reek, he”, meaning the sword Jaime gave away to Brienne because he couldn’t use it, i.e., it’s “junk” to Jaime

The DOWN clues seem so much more accessible somehow. I will keep working,this is fun!
