Daemon Sand: Doran's bait?

Hos the Hostage

In the Winds of Winter, Arianne is going to meet Jon Connington and Aegon VI.

An important person in her retinue is Daemon Sand. Daemon was the one to take Arianne's madienhead, he loved her enough to ask Doran for Arianne's hand in marriage, despite his bastard status. Daemon has learned by now that he can't have Arianne. Arianne wonders why Doran has sent Dameon with her. The most obvious reasons are:

1) He is one of Dorne's finest swords.

2) Having loved Arianne once, Doran expectes Daemon to stay loyal to her and guard her well.

There are other interesting things about Daemon. He was rumored to be Oberyn's lover. He is very handsome, with sandy brown hair and sky blue eyes. Is it possible that Doran knows about Jon Connington's love for Rhaegar, and has sent Daemon to seduce Jon Connington?

I doubt jon connington is hungry for dicks. He was in love with rhaegar's charm, buty and also his character. I doubt that some dornish pretty boy is gonna be able to seduce him. Plus doran won't rely on male seduction to win over the griff's. He probably just wants arianne to be safe. However, I am a bit confused as to why doran would send a man who loves arianne to help her convince some one else to take her hand!

I'm a big fan of Doran and I wouldn't put something like that past him if it could advance Dornish interests. However I am sceptical for two reasons.

Firstly I'm not sure how it does help Dorne. You could obviously make the argument that Connington is a trusted advisor and so this would be a way to influence him and this is true to an extent. However this isn't a Tywin-Joffrey dynamic. Connington does advise Aegon but Aegon is headstrong. If Aegon wasn't prepared to ignore Connington's advice he wouldn't be in Westeros. So the advantage of having Daemon whispering in Connington's ear seems to guarantee them nothing. Given we know the Dornish are good at intelligence-gathering it would seem reasonable to assume Doran is aware of this and that to influence Aegon reliably you have to get to Aegon, not Jon.

My second point comes from what we know about Connington. We know he's gay from reading between the lines but also from GRRM confirming it IIRC. Prior to that point, based on text alone, it was not a provable theory, just a likely one. GRRM left it ambiguous to make it interesting for the reader and add textual depth in my opinion, but another reason it was ambiguous is that nobody but Jon Connington knows he's having these feelings. This is a man who puts honour before his personal longings. I would also posit that if Daemon Sand did manage to seduce him, Connington would be honourable and loyal enough to put the interests of Aegon ahead of his own personal longings. It's what he's done for his entire career and he's too old to change. If there's a weak link you can get to in Aegon's circle, JC isn't it for me. The whole point of him is that he's loyal and trustworthy. But even if you could get to him there doesn't seem to be any evidence even the smartest spy could find that would make someone settle on this strategy.

Daemon is her sworn sword doran knows he will protect her I think he will play a major role in the last 2 books possibly kings guard

Ah, a place for Daemon in the kingsguard is something I overlooked. Jon Con is concerned about Aegon's kingsguard. A representative from Dorne (since Arch is away) will be welcome.

I think his reason simply is that Daemon was the one who told him of Ariannes' plan to crown Myrcella. To keep a spy near her...

Edit: I also think that he was sent to squire for Oberyn by Doran in order to keep an eye on him.

Was Daemon part of the conspiracy? How could he know?

It always helps if the person asking you to do something in their interest is someone you find attractive, and Doran Martell has sent two envoys that would appeal to Connington and Aegon whether they prefer men or women. Arianne and Daemon would probably let either or both have sex with them, if it meant binding the Golden Company and its Targaryen pretender to Dorne. But if Arianne has already had doubts about how likely it is that a seduction would work on a man who had pretended to be dead for fifteen years to launch his coup against the Iron Throne, certainly Doran Martell has seen it too.

Daemon Sand might be expected to seduce Connington or Aegon if an opportunity arises, but I'm sure his primary job other than protecting Arianne is to help her assess the strength of the Golden Company.
