Hey everyone. I'm in need of a book or book series recommendation.

I've never been a huge comic book fan but I've loved super hero movies, especially Nolan's Dark Knight Trilogy and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I thought about getting into comics but it's fairly daunting due to the 60 years I've missed! A few of the things I've realized that interests me significantly about both the Marvel and DC Universes is the depth of history, large cast of characters and having them take place in our own world just with changes (superpowers obviously, gods being real, time travel, stuff like that).

With that said, can anyone recommend me a book or book series that is similar to these shared universes? Thanks!

Malazan fits nearly every detail, but it doesn't even remotely take place in our own world.

Dresden Files might fit the bill, especially as the series develops. It's an urban fantasy, but there's a fairly super-hero vibe to some of the goings-on, and although in terms of powers and background and that he's completely unalike, one of the inspirations for the main character is pretty clearly Peter Parker.

Turbulence by Samit Basu is a fantastic superhero novel and fits most of what you're looking for, but as it's not very long and it charts the beginning of superheroes in its world, it hasn't got the depth of history (though it's got a sequel which may fit the bill better, though I haven't read it yet as it doesn't appear to be available in epub form atm).

You might also like Brandon Sanderson's Adolsium universe. Technically, Richard K Morgans Takeshi Kovacs series and his A Land Fit For Heroes series also shares a universe.

In terms of other comics, you might be interested in Brandon Graham's upcoming 8House series. You may also like Mignola's Hellboy shared universe, Robert Kirkman's Invincible universe, the good parts of the Wildstorm universe (Ellis' Stormwatch, The Authority, and Planetary, Millar's The Authority, Casey's Wildcats, Brubaker's Sleeper), Alan Moore's America's Best Comics line, Bendis' Powers universe (though only one comic, it's similar in scope), and Gaiman and Carey's Sandman universe (also, many of Gaiman's books share a universe similar to how Stephen King's does).
