NFL Preseason: Manziel-free edition

Continued from here.

It's very hard to take any criticism of Russell Wilson seriously, especially coming from a Browns fan. In any case, any rookie QB needs first and foremost to have a good work ethic. Wilson won the starting job because he treated the preseason like the superbowl and never stopped. His ceiling might be lower than other QBs, but certainly not that low.

I'll just copy and paste my post at the end of last thread.

"First, Hoyer should be the starter if the Browns want Manziel to ever, ever be any good. They have both struggled, but in different, and significant, ways.

Hoyer's timing is off because he is splitting reps with Manziel. He is still making the right reads and throwing to the correct receivers, though. Timing is a problem that can be corrected (relatively) easily with practice.

Not being able to identify blitzes, not going through progressions, and only reading the primary receiver and then running are issues that aren't correctable without a lot of time. That is Manziel's issue. The game is too fast, too complicated, and too big for him right now. Throw him out there against the Yinz in week one, and he is going to look awfully similar to another QB who wore #2 and wasn't ready.

It's the same issue Manziel had in college. The pockets didn't break down around him in aTm, he ran out of protection unnecessarily and didn't climb the pocket because he didn't understand what he was seeing. That can work in college, but he simply isn't fast enough to outrun defenders at this level.

Manziel is very, very easy to defend right now, ask Les Miles.

DE's don't rush, they play contain. One LB spies. Zone coverages. Pressure comes up the middle.

We play that defense twice a year down I-71 way. Atkins will fucking kill him. Then you have to deal with Dick Lebeau, who isn't exactly what one would call incompetent."

Common sense won out over media hoopla. Thank Jeebus.

FWIW, my Cleveland predictions this year. <<Puts on Carnac hat>>

The Browns will LOSE their first two games. The Steelers are tough on opening day, especially at home. Then they will drop a close one to the Saints.

The fans will be yelling for Jonny Football, but Pettine wisely sticks with Hoyer. The Browns then rip off 6 in a row! Finally losing at the Bengals. They lose a close one to the Texans,.. then win their next 4.... including a shocking win over the Colts and winning the home game against the Bengals. They lose to the Panthers away... but come home to win the final game.

The Browns finish with a 11-5 season, possibly win the AFC central, but lose in the first round in the Playoffs. (to either the Texans, Bengals, or Colts)

The Browns haven't won the AFC Central since 1989, and they aren't going to win it this year either.

It's very tough to win the AFC Central these days. Going 11-5 would definitely not be enough.

You think? Not that 11-5 is even a guarantee that they make the playoffs (See Patriots of 2008),.. but I don't see the Steelers or Ravens being anything but 8-8 teams... Only the Bengals I think have potential and with a strong push by the Browns... I can see 11-5 winning that division easy.

In fact the Bengals won it with an 11-5 record just last year.

They most certainly did not! The Bengals haven't won the Central since way back in 1990!

(Should I just give up on this joke? Does Bormon have balefire-ed blocked?)

That's what I was wondering, but I can't see why. I don't really post all that often.

Edit: Ah! There we go!

HA!!! I am stupid ..... took me this long to get it. Guess I am stuck in the 80's

No worries :cool4:

I will say that Browns fans are some of the most optimistic pre-season fans I have ever encountered. For a team that hasn't won more than 5 games in a season since 2007, that is truly impressive.

Time to fly the colors, then.

Sorry, Ofc. Bobrovsky, you're off the case for now. You can come back sometime in winter/spring. You're still the number one cop on the force, but this isn't your specialty. Ofc. Thomas is on the case now.
