If that pick is a 3rd rounder or more, I'm gonna kill Lovie Smith.

What is a god-fearing man doing consorting with the serpent!?!

ETA: The Broncos should look into being the 3 seed in the AFC. This #1 seed for Peyton Manning shit isn't working.

What? Do you think what went wrong in the Super Bowl was that they were seeded too high? Because I thought it was that the Seahawks were better.

Jerry Jones is on fire this offseason. Between photos emerging of him with, um, escorts (and then, unrelated, unfortunately saying he wants the Cowboys to "return to its glory-hole years") and admitting his son had to forcibly take the draft card from him so he wouldn't draft Manizel, he's bordering on self parody. Now he's provided the overriding philosophy for the Cowboys:under his stewardship:

"We're the glitz and glamour of the NFL. We want to kick [our opponents’] you-know-what with glitz and glamour.”

I dunno, I'm now imagining Anthony Spencer bedazzling the fuck out of opposing QBs. Is that just me?

Wow. Logan Mankins is gone? That's kind of shocking. He was and as far as I knew, is a stud. Brady is not going to love playing Buffalo this year. Or the Jets.

The feeling I've been getting is that he's been slipping and he's not at the level he used to be. I guess this is Belichick's policy about getting rid of guys a year early than a year too late.

But yeah, the OL was my biggest concern this offseason. This does not help.

Does anyone know if Tim Wright is worth a damn?

What I've read from the twitter draft community is he has a ton of potential and will be really good with the Patriots from a pass catching perspective. He seems to move like a big WR. Take that for what you will.

Its insane.

The deal ends up being Mankins for Tight End Tim Wright and an Undisclosed Draft pick (ug.... Pats don't need ANOTHER 4th round pick).

For starters, Mankins has been a complete stud for the Pats since he got here (ten years ago- that's relevant). Last season he actually was moved out to Left Tackle when Solder was injured (and Vollmer) and played fine (not great. That's relevant as well).

Word from the start of camp was that the O-line looked vulnerable, but not terrible and that was at the START of camp (I hope to be capitalizing in mid-season form shortly).

Mankins is 32 years old. And was looking creakier as time was wearing on (but that still made him better than 75% of the Guards out there). Also, the Pats had 10 guys at O-LIne that they were- apparently- happy with during camp and projected to make the roster; the depth at O-line is there with a variety of vets and younger guys. Connelly, Klien, Cannon, etc. The sentiment being fostered by the media is that Belichick was sending a message that Mankins was no longer "elite" and that losing him would not be a problem. Also, the salary- The Patriots will save $6.25 million in cash this year and $7 million next year by trading Mankins. The trade also creates $5.755 million in cap space for 2014.

Maybe to help renegotiate for Revis, which is apparently already a priority.

AND the Pats are in desperate need at TE, Gronk is a 265 pound Question Mark. How healthy can he be? What happens when he goes down? (like last season where for those 5 weeks Gronk played, the Pats looked like world-beaters and sadly pedestrian at all other times). Who can Brady get the ball to when Gronk is in double coverage or out 4-6 weeks? Wright?

The thing is, from what I read, Wright was a MARGINAL starter for the Bucs... the Tampa Bay Bucs! He might not have even made the team. Now? Now ... he has, what? 17 days to learn the playbook?

Okay, so... what to think? On the surface, this is an insane stunning development. However- and this is inverted logic, I grant you - IF Mankins had lost a step and was no longer worth the money and would begin the decline, then selling now was brilliant. But where was this evidence of decline? If Bill Belichick is exceptional at ONE thing its knowing when a player has lost it- NO player ever ever left the Pats and then became a household name afterwards- Ty Law, Lawyer Malloy, Richard Seymoure, Adam Venniteri, Deon Branch, Brandoin Merriweather, Randy Moss, BJGE, even going as far back as Bernie Kosar - none of these guys ever made Belichick have to wipe the egg off his face. He knows when a guy has had enough.

With that benefit of the doubt in mind, maybe this was the beginning of the end of one of the best Patriot O-linemen in a long, long time.

I agree that both were "good" but neither elevated their teams and both were reasonably replaced by the Pats (most notably Gostkowski has been exceptional for the Pats at kicker).

Samuel is a tough one because the Pats suffered at DB for a long time. However, IIRC, Samuel was signed as an unrestricted FA by the Eagles; the Pats may have wanted him but the Eaglkes were willing to overpay so, they got a B- player at a A- salary.

Honestly, the only one I would really say "maybe" to would be Richard Seymour who the Pats could have used. But they got a #1 and that was, IIRC, Solder.

But there's a difference there between being 'replaceable' and never 'making a name for yourself' afterward.

Adam V is a local hero in Indy, he won the Baltimore playoff game in 2006 off of his right foot alone. Five fieldgoals.

Anyways, I'm thinking about buying the new Madden... temptation...

But long term? I think the Pats got the most value for that deal because Veniteri was ... fine for the Colts; but Gostkowski has- again going from memory- lead the league in 50 yard FGs since he replaced Adam.

But ... I am losing the forest through the trees here. I think my ultimate point here is that time will tell on this one and that history, I think, shows Belichick is rarely wrong about these.

Okay so in my sad, sad attempt to talk myself into this trade:

From anti-Belichick crusader Adam Wilbur at the Boston Globe:

There is also this: According to Football Outsiders, Wright finished sixth among all tight ends last season in DYAR (Defense-adjusted Yards Above Replacement), ... Wright had a DYAR of 133, only one point shy of Jason Witten, and only two points behind Tony Gonzalez. Vernon Davis (199), Julius Thomas (214) and Jimmy Graham (223) represented the top three in the NFL.
